Spain participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Spanish entry was selected through the national final Mira quién va a Eurovisión (Look who's going to Eurovision), which was organised by the Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE). Ruth Lorenzo represented Spain with the song "Dancing in the Rain", which placed 10th in the final, scoring 74 points.

Mira quién va a Eurovisión

On 20 January 2014, TVE announced that it would organise a national final in order to select the Spanish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.[1] This marked a return to a multi-artist national final selection procedure by the Spanish broadcaster, who last organised a televised multi-artist national final in 2011. Five artists, who were invited to compete by TVE, took part in the national final Mira quién va a Eurovisión which was broadcast live on 22 February from TVE's studios in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, hosted by Anne Igartiburu.[2] The five competing acts and the titles of their entries were announced officially on 20 January. The winner was selected by a combination of televoting (50%) and jury voting (50%).[1] The jury panel that accounted for 50% of the votes consisted of singers David Bustamante, Merche and Mónica Naranjo.[3] Brequette and Ruth Lorenzo tied with the same amount of points, but Ruth Lorenzo won due to the televoting results prevailing according to the rules.

Promotion

Before her appearance at the contest, Lorenzo went on a promotional tour, performing in several European countries. Prior to her selection, Lorenzo gave interviews and appeared on many Spanish TV and radio shows and singing "Dancing in the Rain".[4] On 2 March Lorenzo appeared at the TVE's Todos Somos Raros, Todos Somos Únicos telethon and sang "Dancing in the Rain" at the end of the night.[5] During March 2014, Lorenzo visited different Spanish cities, appearing on various radio and TV shows and giving interviews, performing "Dancing in the Rain" on the Spanish version of Dancing with the Stars (¡Mira quién baila!).[6] On 27 March, Lorenzo swam with sharks at the Madrid Zoo Aquarium to fulfill his promise whether it was the representative of Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.[7] Lorenzo was also one of 25 acts from the 2014 contest to perform during the 2014 Eurovision in Concert, the largest gathering of Eurovision artists outside of Eurovision itself, held in the Melkweg, a popular music venue in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 5 April 2014.[8] This was followed by an appearance at the London Preview Party alongside 15 other participating entries from 2014, held at the Café de Paris nightclub in London on 13 April.[9] On 13 April, Lorenzo performed "Dancing in the Rain" in Birmingham, United Kingdom as the headline act during the city's annual Birmingham Pride Ball.[10][11] Lorenzo also took part in several interviews and performances on Swedish, Belgian and Dutch TV.[11]

At Eurovision

As a member of the "Big Five", Spain automatically qualified for a place in the final, to be held on 10 May 2014. In addition to their participation in the final, Spain was assigned to vote in the first semi-final on 6 May 2014.[12] During the Spanish delegation's press conference on 6 May 2014, Spain was allocated to compete in the second half of the final.[13] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Spain would perform 19th, following Finland and preceding Switzerland.[14] Spain placed 10th in the final, scoring 74 points.[15]

At the contest, Ruth Lorenzo was joined on stage by four backing vocalists that did not appear on camera: Mey Green, Sandra Borrego, Aiwinnie Mybaby and Alana Sinkëy.[16] The Spanish entry was placed 10th, the only Big Five country to reach the Top 10.

In Spain, the first semi-final was broadcast on La 2 and the final aired on La 1, both shows with commentary by José María Íñigo.[17] The Spanish spokesperson revealing the result of the Spanish vote in the final was Carolina Casado.[18]
