SA Nuclear Energy SystemsIn February 2015, Lincoln told the Whyalla News of SA Nuclear Energy Systems' proposal to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) around Eyre Peninsula and construct a uranium enrichment facility in Whyalla.[2] In response to community concerns about safety, Lincoln described the industry as "highly regulated"[2] and said that enrichment plants "don’t pose a radioactive threat."[3] The discussion followed the Government of South Australia's announcement that a Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission would commence in March 2015, with a report to be delivered to the Government by May 2016. Nuclear fusionWhen Lockheed Martin announced a "major breakthrough" in fusion power in October 2014, Lincoln described the process of nuclear fusion for the Australian Science Media Centre. He expressed some reservations about the alleged break-through, noting that achieving an energy output greater than the required energy input had limited fusion power development since the 1950s. He said "It is unclear from the Lockheed announcement as to whether this very major problem has been overcome. If it has, this would be a remarkable achievement."[4] Fukushima nuclear disasterLincoln expressed concern over the fate of Caesium-137 and Strontium-90 released to the environment during the Fukushima nuclear disaster. In April 2011 he told the Sydney Morning Herald: "[People] should not venture into the ocean [where the radioactive materials are being released]; they should not eat any fish or seaweed from the ocean. The living species likely to be most affected are shellfish because they are stationary whereas fish that swim may pass through the area and out again. The shellfish such as mussels, oysters and clams certainly accumulate high levels of radioactivity... Basically we should be worried until they can stop the [radiation] leaks and cool the cores and the fuel rods down."[5] References1. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.adelaide.edu.au/environment/gel/news/biography/stephenlincoln.html|title = Seminar 12 - Sustainable Futures - Climate Change and Energy: Basic Realities|date = |accessdate = 2015-03-21|website = Environment Institute - Climate & Ecology|publisher = University of Adelaide|last = |first = }} {{DEFAULTSORT:Lincoln, Stephen}}2. ^1 {{Cite news|url = http://www.portlincolntimes.com.au/story/2907310/nuclear-future-for-eyre-peninsula/|title = Nuclear future for Eyre Peninsula|last = Hussey|first = Sam|date = 2015-02-26|work = |access-date = 2015-03-21|newspaper = Whyalla News}} 3. ^{{Cite news|url = http://www.whyallanewsonline.com.au/story/2952880/nuclear-expert-enrichment-plant-nothing-to-fear/|title = Nuclear expert: Enrichment plant nothing to fear|last = Lewis|first = Bryn|date = 2015-03-18|work = |access-date = 2015-03-21}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.smc.org.au/2014/10/expert-reaction-lockheed-martin-announces-nuclear-fusion-power-breakthrough/|title = EXPERT REACTION: Lockheed Martin announces nuclear fusion power breakthrough|date = 2014-10-16|accessdate = 2015-03-21|website = AusSMC|publisher = |last = |first = }} 5. ^{{Cite news|url = http://www.smh.com.au/environment/energy-smart/sinister-seven-what-japans-new-nuclear-crisis-rating-means-20110412-1dc5l.html|title = Sinister seven: what Japan's new nuclear crisis rating means|last = Kwek|first = Glenda|date = 2011-04-12|work = |access-date = 2015-03-21|newspaper = Sydney Morning Herald}} 4 : Living people|Australian scientists|Australian academics|Year of birth missing (living people) |
