{{Orphan|date=October 2016}}Stephen M. Coan is an American environmentalist. He has been president and chief executive officer of Sea Research Foundation since 2006.[1] Based in Mystic, Conn., Sea Research Foundation operates Mystic Aquarium,[2] Institute for Exploration and, in cooperation with National Geographic Society, The JASON Project.[3]

Education

Coan grew up in Massachusetts, and earned his bachelor's degree from Brandeis University[4] and a master's in management and doctorate in social policy from the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis.[5]

Activism

Coan is an advocate for stewardship of the oceans, and has called on the U.S. government to designate additional Marine Protected Areas and to give existing ones more funding.[6] He has spoken in favour of Senate approval of the International Law of the Sea Treaty, coastal and marine spatial planning to protect vital resources, and enhanced management for fisheries.[7]

Coan advocates for improved science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, and has written opinion pieces for the Huffington Post and spoken at the National Educator’s Conference in Milwaukee, WI and the After School Alliance and C.S. Mott Foundation Joint Conference on this topic.

Coan sits on the board of trustees of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.[8] He was a member of the National Science Foundation's review panel on to study proposals for its National Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education Digital Library (NSDL).

Professional career

Coan has held faculty appointments at Tufts University, Bentley College and Cambridge College. He was the chief education officer of the JASON Foundation for Education, now known as The JASON Project.

Coan has been an officer of Sea Research Foundation since 2001 and was appointed chief operating officer in 2004.[9] He is a trustee of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation,[10] Pine Point School[11] and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation in Baltimore, Md. He is also a founding trustee of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association.[12]

Coan received William Crawford Distinguished Service Award in 2014.[13]
