It is a parish church in the deanery of Enfield, the archdeaconry of Hampstead, and the diocese of London.[1] HistorySt James’ was the first Anglican place of worship to be established in the parish of Enfield in addition to the parish church. It was built by subscription as a chapel of ease on land given by Woodham Connop and consecrated on 15 October 1831 by the Bishop of London, Charles Blomfield. A district was assigned to the church on 9 December 1833, comprising the whole of the parish of east of a line drawn at a distance of 150 yards to the west of the main road from Edmonton to Cheshunt. The church was licensed for marriages in 1845.[2] The architect was William Conrad Lochner (c.1779-1861), surveyor to the Royal Exchange Assurance Co.,[3] who designed a church in a very similar style at de Beauvoir Town, Hackney, and restored St Andrew's church, Enfield. It was built from stock brick with stone dressings in a plain "Commissioners gothic" style with aisles and a western tower.[4] Structural problems with the church soon emerged. In 1841 the Ecclesiologist magazine reported "St James Enfield Highway which has been consecrated six or eight years, is already condemned as 'dangerous', since the heavy tied roof is threatening to fall in from the rotting of the ends of the beams, which are said to have been laid in the most disgraceful manner upon the mere damp brick-work"[5] The first incumumbent was T.W. Thirlwall. He was succeeded by Charles Warren, J.R. Nicholl and, in 1841, John Fuller Russell.[6] Russell, who remained at the church until 1854, was a theological writer, a committee member of the high church Cambridge Camden Society and a notable collector of early religious art.[7] In 1854 he published Obedience to the Church in Things Ritual: Two Sermons Preached in St. James’s Church, Enfield Highway. A large chancel was added at the expense of the Rev J. Harman in memory of his wife and consecrated in 1864. The east end of the church was seriously damaged by a fire in 1967, and considerable alterations were in the course of repairs, including the removal of the chancel arch and extension of the sanctuary.[8] With its population of over 26,900, it is one of the largest parishes in England.[9] The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.[10] References1. ^{{Citation | url = http://www.achurchnearyou.com/st-james-enfield-highway/| title = St James’ Church, Enfield Highway| accessdate = 11 March 2011| publisher = Church of England}} {{coord |51|39|21|N|0|2|49|W|type:landmark_region:GB-ENF|display=title}}{{Churches in Enfield |state=autocollapse}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Enfield: St James' Church}}{{London-church-stub}}{{UK-listed-building-stub}}2. ^{{cite book|title=A History of Enfield in the County of Middlesex |first2= George H.|last2= Hodson|first1= Edward |last1=Ford|location=Enfield|year=1873|url=https://archive.org/stream/historyofenfield00forduoft/historyofenfield00forduoft_djvu.txt|page=313}} 3. ^{{cite book |title=Dictionary of British Architects 1834-1914 L-Z|last=Brodie |first=Antonia |authorlink= |year=2001 |publisher= |location= |isbn= |page= |pages=62 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=GkThQYLb3ZUC&pg=PA62&dq |accessdate=31 May 2011}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=26957 |title=Enfield: Churches |author=T F T Baker, R B Pugh (Editors), A P Baggs, Diane K Bolton, Eileen P Scarff, G C Tyack |publisher=Institute of Historical Research |year=1976 |work=A History of the County of Middlesex: Volume 5: Hendon, Kingsbury, Great Stanmore, Little Stanmore, Edmonton Enfield, Monken Hadley, South Mimms, Tottenham |accessdate=1 August 2012 }} 5. ^{{cite journal |last1= |first1= |last2= |first2= |year=1841 |title=Notices |journal=The Ecclesiologist |volume= 1|issue= |page=210 |publisher= |doi= |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=4HkoAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA210&dq=ecclesiologist+enfield+highway+james+roof&hl=en&ei=XiXkTZ34HJOLhQfb4Z3zBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false |accessdate=30 May 2011 }} 6. ^{{cite book |title=A History of Enfield |last=Ford |first=Edward |authorlink= |coauthors= |year=1873 |publisher= |location= |page=313 |url= |accessdate=}} 7. ^ONDB http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/24327 Retrieved 15 April 2011 8. ^{{Citation | url = http://www.stjameschurch.cc/a-short-history/| title = A Short History| accessdate = 11 March 2011| publisher = St James' Church, Enfield Highway}} 9. ^{{Citation | url = https://www.cuf.org.uk/parish/230367/| title = Tackling Poverty Together|| accessdate = 5 May 2016| publisher = Church Urban Fund}} 10. ^{{IoE|200665|accessdate=30 May 2011}} 4 : Church of England church buildings in the London Borough of Enfield|Grade II listed churches in London|19th-century Church of England church buildings|Diocese of London |
