This book is the third in the series featuring the character Laidlaw.[1] This series of books is recognised as the foundation of the Tartan Noir genre.[2] PlotThe novel centres around the death of Jack Laidlaw's brother who is run over by a car. Laidlaw is faced with an emotional journey to the depths of Glasgow's underworld and his own past, to discover the truth, finds out as much about himself as his brother. StyleUnlike the first two novels in this series, Strange Loyalties is written as a first-person narrative.[3] EditionsThe book was first published in 1991 by Hodder & Staughton, and was reissued on 3 June 2013 by Canongate.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|last=Dickson|first=Beth|title=William McIlvanney’s Laidlaw Novels|url=http://www.arts.gla.ac.uk/scotlit/asls/Laverock-McIlvanney-2.html|publisher=The Association for Scottish Literary Studies|accessdate=2 August 2013}} {{William McIlvanney}}{{1990s-crime-novel-stub}}{{Europe-novel-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|last=Massie|first=Allan|title=Scotland's master of crime is also its Camus|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/10080000/Scotlands-master-of-crime-is-also-its-Camus.html|accessdate=2 August 2013|newspaper=The Telegraph|date=25 May 2013}} 3. ^{{cite journal|last=Peacock|first=James|title=Divided Loyalties, Changing Landscapes: William McIlvanney's Laidlaw Novels|journal=English: Journal of the English Association|volume=62|issue=236|pages=69–86|url=http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/english/eft001|accessdate=2 August 2013|doi=10.1093/english/eft001}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Strange Loyalties|url=http://www.canongate.tv/strange-loyalties.html|publisher=Canongate|accessdate=2 August 2013}} 8 : Scottish novels|Scottish crime novels|Novels set in Glasgow|British crime novels|British detective novels|1991 British novels|Hodder & Stoughton books|Novels by William McIlvanney |
