ProductionPotter's screenplay had been circulating in Hollywood for many years as Potter was enthusiastic about a film version. Robert Altman was at one time attached to direct with Dustin Hoffman in the lead, but financing proved difficult and the production was shelved. It was eventually discovered by an executive at Mel Gibson's production company Icon Productions, who loved it and got Gibson on board to produce. The screenplay had also been imagined as a horror film directed by genre veteran David Cronenberg and starring Al Pacino as the title character.[4] ReceptionThe film scored a 39% "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus being 'Delightful performance from Robert Downey Jr. can't save The Singing Detective's transition from TV to the big screen'.[5] While some critics, such as Roger Ebert, liked the film, others, like Joe Baltake at the Sacramento Bee, considered it an "interesting failure".[6] SoundtrackThe soundtrack to The Singing Detective was released on October 14, 2003. {{Track listing| collapsed = no | extra_column = Artist | total_length = 37:20[7] | title1 = In My Dreams | length1 = 3:02 | extra1 = Gene Vincent | title2 = Just Walking in the Rain | length2 = 2:48 | extra2 = Johnnie Ray | title3 = Mr. Sandman | length3 = 2:24 | extra3 = The Chordettes | title4 = It's All in the Game | length4 = 2:37 | extra4 = Tommy Edwards | title5 = Poison Ivy | length5 = 2:42 | extra5 = The Coasters | title6 = Important Words | length6 = 2:22 | extra6 = Gene Vincent | title7 = Harlem Nocturne | length7 = 2:22 | extra7 = The Viscounts | title8 = At the Hop | length8 = 2:29 | extra8 = Danny & the Juniors | title9 = Woman Love | length9 = 2:33 | extra9 = Gene Vincent | title10 = When | length10 = 2:26 | extra10 = The Kalin Twins | title11 = Flip Flop and Fly | length11 = 2:47 | extra11 = Big Joe Turner | title12 = Three Steps to Heaven | length12 = 2:22 | extra12 = Eddie Cochran | title13 = It's Only Make Believe | length13 = 2:14 | extra13 = Conway Twitty | title14 = In My Dreams | length14 = 4:12 | extra14 = Robert Downey, Jr. }} References1. ^{{cite web | title=THE SINGING DETECTIVE (15) | url=http://www.bbfc.co.uk/AFF188850/ | publisher=British Board of Film Classification | date=October 2, 2003 | accessdate=June 14, 2012}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=The Singing Detective (2003) - Box office / business|url=https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314676/business|publisher=Internet Movie Database|accessdate=14 June 2012}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=The Singing Detective (2003)|url=http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=singingdetective.htm|publisher=Box Office Mojo|accessdate=14 June 2012}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314676/trivia|title=The Singing Detective|date=November 14, 2003|publisher=|via=IMDb}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/singing_detective/|title=The Singing Detective|publisher=}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/singing_detective/|title=The Singing Detective|publisher=}} 7. ^The Singing Detective Soundtrack AllMusic.
