In the Māori language Tahuna means sandbank, likely to refer to the sandbanks along the nearby Piako River, where a Māori settlement started. Tahuna is seen as the upper limit for navigatable travel on the Piako River.[1] The settlement has a primary school, rugby club, lawn bowls, golf club, fuel station, motorcycle shop and a volunteer fire brigade. Although Tahuna is in the Matamata-Piako District for local government, its representation in national government is within the Coromandel electorate due the abolition of the Piako electorate for the {{NZ election link|2008}}.[2] There are two marae in the Tahuna area. The Waiti-Raungaunu marae and Paoa meeting house are also associated with the Waikato Tainui hapū of Ngāti Makirangi, and with the iwi of Ngāti Paoa. Hoe o Tainui marae and surrounding settlement is affiliated just with Ngāti Makirangi.[3][4] References1. ^http://www.ohinemuri.org.nz/journal/51/early_shipping.htm 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.elections.org.nz/elections/electorates/topic-final-electorate-boundaries.html |title=Final Electorate Boundaries |publisher=elections.org.nz |accessdate=2012-07-09 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120716192826/http://www.elections.org.nz/elections/electorates/topic-final-electorate-boundaries.html |archivedate=2012-07-16 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Te Kāhui Māngai directory|url= http://www.tkm.govt.nz/ |website=tkm.govt.nz|publisher=Te Puni Kōkiri}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Māori Maps |url=https://maorimaps.com/map |website=maorimaps.com |publisher=Te Potiki National Trust}} 2 : Populated places in Waikato|Matamata-Piako District |
