The Temco XKDT Teal was an American rocket-propelled, high-performance target drone, built by Temco Aircraft for evaluation by the United States Navy in the late 1950s. Production was not proceeded with following evaluation of the type. Design and developmentThe XKDT was designed for use an inexpensive and expendable air-launched, high-performance target drone. Its design utilized a low-set swept wing, and an inverted cruciform tail; the structure of the aircraft included aluminum honeycomb wing construction and extensive use of magnesium and fiberglass in the fuselage.[1] It was intended to reach speeds of up to Mach 0.95.[2] The Teal could be launched at any altitude of up to {{convert|50000|ft}}; speed at launch was between {{convert|163|kn}} and {{convert|248|kn}}. Following launch a dual-thrust solid fuel rocket motor ignited; thrust was {{convert|150|lbf}} for the first four seconds of powered flight, followed by {{convert|50|lbf}} for approximately 500 seconds propulsive time.[1] Control was provided by a three-axis autopilot; radar reflectors and infrared flares provided an assist in tracking the drone, and at the end of nine minutes' flight time a self-destruct device would be activated.[1] Operational historyThe first flight of a XKDT-1 took place in September 1957; most flights utilized a McDonnell F3H Demon carrier aircraft.[3] Following the conclusion of the evaluation program, no production contract was placed; supersonic targets having become preferred.[3] Specifications (XKDT-1){{Aircraft specs|ref=Parsch[3] |prime units?=imp |crew=None |capacity= |length m= |length ft=11 |length in=10 |length note= |span m= |span ft=4 |span in=11 |span note= |dia m= |dia ft=10 |dia in= |dia note= |height m= |height ft= |height in= |height note= |wing area sqm= |wing area sqft= |wing area note= |aspect ratio= |airfoil= |empty weight kg= |empty weight lb= |empty weight note= |gross weight kg= |gross weight lb=350 |gross weight note= |max takeoff weight kg= |max takeoff weight lb= |max takeoff weight note= |fuel capacity= |more general= |eng1 number=1 |eng1 name=Astrodyne 4NS150 |eng1 type=solid-fuel rocket |eng1 kn= |eng1 lbf=150 |eng1 note=3.8 seconds |thrust original= |eng2 number=1 |eng2 name=Astrodyne 480NS50 |eng2 type=solid-fuel rocket |eng2 kn= |eng2 lbf=50 |eng2 note=480 seconds |max speed kmh= |max speed mph= |max speed kts= |max speed note= |max speed mach=0.95 |cruise speed kmh= |cruise speed mph= |cruise speed kts= |cruise speed note= |stall speed kmh= |stall speed mph= |stall speed kts= |stall speed note= |never exceed speed kmh= |never exceed speed mph= |never exceed speed kts= |never exceed speed note= |range km= |range miles= |range nmi= |range note= |endurance=8-9 minutes |ceiling m= |ceiling ft=52500 |ceiling note= |g limits= |roll rate= |glide ratio= |climb rate ms= |climb rate ftmin= |climb rate note= |time to altitude= |lift to drag= |wing loading kg/m2= |wing loading lb/sqft= |wing loading note= |fuel consumption kg/km= |fuel consumption lb/mi= |thrust/weight= |more performance= |avionics= }} References1. ^1 2 "Targets and Drones".
