Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatyuk National Pedagogical University (commonly referred to as TNPU) is a university located in Ternopil, Ukraine.

Named after the Ukrainian ethnographer Volodymyr Hnatiuk, TNPU is one of the most famous pedagogical universities in Ukraine. Founded as the Kremenetskii Lyceum in 1805 by Alexander I and reopened as a teaching college in 1940,[1] the college is one of the oldest universities in the western region of Ukraine. According to the rating of higher educational establishments of Ukraine{{Citation needed|date=January 2014}}, it is one of the top three humanitarian and pedagogical universities in the country.

The University provides courses in the sciences and humanities with a focus on education and teaching.[2] It offers postgraduate degrees in several disciplines, again mostly concentrated on teaching and the theory behind it.[3]

Organization and administration

TNPU is equipped to modern standards, with laboratory space, visual aids and computers. Students can use the library which is equipped with the necessary supplies and textbooks, literature, spacious reading rooms, and a virtual library with educational and scientific literature. For the convenience of visitors to the library attached to the department of scientific and technical information and automation, the Faculty have significantly increased the base of electronic catalog and electronic versions of publications.The University computer network now connects all academic buildings and student dormitories in order to provide ease of access to the Internet.

The TNPU is among the first of the educational institutions of the Ukraine to implement the idea of the learning process of the Bologna Declaration. These implementations included introducing new forms of self-study for students, their consistent and systematic education via online modules, enacted server management teaching resources on the basis of MODULE; enabling unified teachers to prepare their courses online and thereby establishing a permanent monitoring of the quality control of education from the existing diagnostic framework by utilizing Senior research students as internal control while training.

The educational process at the department based on the principles of dialogical conception of education, aimed to form integrative and communicative competences and involves teaching students of foreign language communication in the context of different cultures. The faculty introduces the basic principles of the Bologna process, uses the European forms of work.

Teachers developed and offered to students to choose different kinds of special courses on problems of modern language, literature and methods of teaching foreign languages. They practice innovative forms of individual and independent work: INDZ, online and group projects, working with linguistic CDs, current and complete computer testing, etc.

The Faculty introduces new methods of teaching : Critical Thinking (K. Popper ), the development of creative thinking ( D. Kuher, etc.) and trainings (personal growth, development of creative and communication skills).

History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Foreign Languages was established in 1993 by the opening of the specialty “English Language and Literature”. A year later, there was the inauguration of the students of the German department, and in 2000 it was appeared the specialty “French Language and Literature”. In 2003, the department opened non-teaching specialists training course "Translation (English- Ukrainian)".

The faculty has six departments: English Philology, the practice of English and methods of its teaching, the theory and practice of translation, German, French, foreign languages. They are headed by 4 Candidates of Philological Sciences, 2 Doctors of Pedagogy. 96 teachers teach more than 800 students, 6 technicians and 4 engineers help them and serving computer rooms.

The faculty provides the training of specialists in the following educational- qualification levels:

• Bachelor of Teacher Education: - teacher of foreign language (English, German, French) - translator and teacher of English;

• Specialist: - teacher of the main and second languages and foreign literature teacher – translator of English, an English language teacher and a second foreign language teacher;

• Master of Teacher Education: - teacher of the main foreign language, teacher of the second language and foreign literature;

• Master of Philology - translator of English, an English teacher and teacher of a second foreign language.

Research

Research works of teachers and students focused on the research of complex topics in linguistics, literature, language teaching methodology and pedagogy, three of them have a state registration. From the 96 teachers working at the faculty, 2 teachers have the degree of Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, and 54 of them have degree of Candidate of Sciences (including 32 docents).

History

  • In accordance with the Resolution of the Ukrainian SSR Council of People's Commissars (March 4, 1940), Kremenets Teachers’ Institute was founded on the basis of Kremenets lycée.
  • In accordance with the Resolution #2403 of the Ukrainian SSR Council of Ministers (August 4, 1950), Kremenets Teachers’ Institute was reorganized into Pedagogical Institute.
  • In accordance with the Resolution #423 of the Ukrainian SSR Council of Ministers (July 21, 1969), Kremenets Teachers’ Institute was relocated to Ternopil.
  • In accordance with the Resolution #555 of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers (June 9, 1997), Ternopil State Pedagogical University was founded on the basis of Ternopil State Pedagogical Institute.
  • In accordance with the Resolution #1293 of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers (November 19, 1997), Ternopil State Pedagogical University was named after Volodymyr Hnatyuk.
  • In accordance with the Decree #957/2004 of the President of Ukraine (August 21, 2004), Ternopil State Pedagogical University was given the status of National University.

Campuses and Buildings

  • Building #1 is the main building (2 M. Kryvonis Str.). The administration of the university, the entrance examination committee, the trade union committees of the workers and the students, the library, the geographical department, the chemical and biological department, the department of philology, the department of foreign languages, the department of physical education, the centre of pre-entrance training, the centre of monitoring of the education services quality and job placement assistance for students and graduates are all situated here.
  • Building #2 (10 Vynnychenko Str.). The engineer-pedagogical department and the psychology-pedagogical department of the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology are situated here.
  • Building #3 (10 Vynnychenko Str.). The Institute of Arts, the department of primary education of the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology, and the students’ recreation centre “Svitlytsia” are situated here.
  • Building #4 (10 Vynnychenko Str.). The physics and mathematics department and the centre of the second higher education are situated here.
  • Building #5 (S. Budnyi Str.). The engineer-pedagogical department is situated here.
  • Building #6 (S. Budnyi Str.). The workshops of the engineer-pedagogical department are situated here.
  • Building #7 (11 Petrykivska Str.). The sub-department of journalism of the department of philology is situated here.
  • Building #8 (1a Hromnytskyi Str.). The historical department is situated here.

International relations

International cooperation and relations of the University based on long-term agreements with partner universities, educational centers and international organizations, including the Academy of Physical Education (Wroclaw, Poland), Rzeszow, Zelenohurskym and University of Lublin (Poland ), University of Economy in Bydgoszcz (Poland), Ukrainian consortium of universities and the University of Warsaw (Poland), Rusenskym University. Angela Kancheva (Bulgaria ), University of Applied Sciences Tsytau / Görlitz ( Germany), University of East European Centre Hohenhaym (Stuttgart, Germany ), Institute of Germanic University of Regensburg (Germany), higher pedagogical school named Victor Frankel Carinthia (Austria ), University Kempbelsvil ( Kentucky ) (USA ), University of Central Arkansas (USA), Rostov State Pedagogical University (Russia ) and many other educational and research institutions.

Notable alumni

Thousands of our alumni have become recognized masters of educational affairs, scholars, known for its scientific achievements not only in Ukraine but also far beyond. Among them - Michael Tsymbaliuk, Head of Lviv Regional State Administration; Tereshchuk Gregory, Vice-Chancellor of the University; MP of Ukraine, Anatoliy Kudrenko; Helen Pidgrushna, European champion in biathlon, a participant of the Olympic Winter Games; Angela Balakhonova, honored Master of Sports, member of the Olympic Games, world silver medalist, European champion, multiple world record holder in Europe. Student football team became the champions of European universities in 2009 and bronze at the World Championship in 2010.
