He was Vice President of Palau from 1985 to 1988, and acting President of Palau twice (1985 and 1988–1989), following the violent deaths of two presidents. When President Haruo Remeliik was assassinated in June 1985, Vice President Oiterong returned from New York City to Palau on 2 July to take office of the President. Between these dates Minister of Justice Remengesau served as acting President until 2 July 1985.[2] Remengesau was elected as Vice President in the special election in August 1985. After the shooting of President Lazarus Salii in August 1988, Remengesau became the President of Palau until Ngiratkel Etpison was sworn in January 1989.[3] FamilyRemengesau is married to Ferista Esang Remengesau, who served as First Lady of Palau during her husband's brief terms as President. They have eight children. Their eldest child is Thomas Remengesau Jr.,[4] who has been the President of Palau from 2001 to 2009 and since 2013. A daughter of Thomas Remengesau Sr. and Ferista Esang Remengesau married Surangel Whipps Jr., a businessman and Palauan Senator who was a candidate in the 2016 Palauan presidential election.[5] References1. ^Presidential Proclamation NO. 10-27 {{s-start}}{{s-off}}{{succession box|title=Acting President of Palau|before=Haruo Remeliik|after=Alfonso Oiterong|years=1985}}{{succession box|title=Vice President of Palau|before=Alfonso Oiterong|after=Kuniwo Nakamura|years=1985–1988}}{{succession box|title=President of Palau|before=Lazarus Salii|after=Ngiratkel Etpison|years=1988–1989}}{{s-end}}{{PalauPresidents}}{{PalauVPs}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Remengesau, Thomas}}{{Palau-politician-stub}}2. ^[https://comfsm.fm/library/digitallibrary/V6N121985.pdf The National Union newspaper] 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DE2DB1031F932A1575BC0A96E948260|title=New York Times article on his second ascension to acting President|accessdate=17 November 2016}} 4. ^{{citation|url=http://palaugov.pw/biography/|title=Biography Palau National Government|accessdate=2018-03-14}} 5. ^{{cite news|first=|last=|title=Palau island election: Brothers-in-law vying for presidency |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/australasia/palau-election-surangel-whipps-jr-tommy-remengesa-a7388551.html |work=The Independent |publisher= |date=2016-10-31 |accessdate=2016-11-05}} 5 : 1929 births|Living people|Presidents of Palau|Vice Presidents of Palau|People from Koror |
