It dates back to the early 18th century, and is claimed to be connected to Lord Nelson.^[1]

In 1992 it was used in the Spinal Tap Reunion tour film. The band visit the pub saying it was their local as teenagers, and recall a list of (fictitious) previous names, including The Bun, The Bun & Puffin, The Queen's Lips and The Restless Cheese.^[2]
