The Theiss Speedster is an American Homebuilt ultralight biplane that was designed and produced by Theiss Aviation of Salem, Ohio. When it was available the aircraft was supplied as a quick-build kit for amateur construction.[1] The Speedster is intended to resemble a 1920s era sport aircraft.[1] Design and developmentThe aircraft was designed to comply with the US FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles rules, including the category's maximum empty weight of {{convert|254|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}. The Speedster features a strut-braced biplane layout with interplane struts, a single-seat open cockpit, fixed conventional landing gear with wheel pants and a single engine in tractor configuration. The top wing is mounted on top of the fuselage instead of the more usual arrangement with cabane struts suspending it above the fuselage.[1] The aircraft is made from a combination of aluminium, wood, steel and foam. Its {{convert|17.50|ft|m|1|abbr=on}} span wing has a total wing area of {{convert|77.50|sqft|m2|abbr=on}}. The cabin width is {{convert|20|in|cm|abbr=on}}. The acceptable power range is {{convert|38|to|55|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} and the standard engine used is the two stroke {{convert|40|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} Kawasaki 440 snowmobile powerplant.[1] The Speedster has a typical empty weight of {{convert|252|lb|kg|abbr=on}} and a gross weight of {{convert|460|lb|kg|abbr=on}}, giving a useful load of {{convert|208|lb|kg|abbr=on}}. With full fuel of {{convert|5|u.s.gal}} the payload for the pilot and baggage is {{convert|178|lb|kg|abbr=on}}.[1] The standard day, sea level, no wind, take off and landing roll with a {{convert|40|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} engine is {{convert|200|ft|m|0|abbr=on}}.[1] The manufacturer estimates the construction time from the supplied kit as 400 hours.[1] After producing the Speedster, the company turned its attention to produce unmanned aerial vehicles for the US Navy and no longer produces manned aircraft.[2] Operational historyBy 1998 the company reported that two aircraft were completed and flying.[1] Specifications (Speedster){{Aircraft specs|ref=AeroCrafter[1] |prime units?=imp
