The original pub, which closed in 2015, had been central to the East London gay scene since it was opened in 1997 by David Alexander Pollard.[2] It had been described as "Britain's trendiest gay dive"[3] with gay public figures including Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane and Patrick Wolf known to have frequented the venue, and with events hosted by gay entertainers Scottee and Jodie Harsh.[4] The venue had been open to a range of gay subcultures such as the bear scene and drag queens. Due to its late night opening and free entry, the Joiners' Arms had a reputation for being a "last chance saloon" and sometimes having a rough crowd,[5] but this has also been described as part of its appeal.[3] The old building is due to be demolished to make way for redevelopment.[6] There is a campaign to save the building as a protected community asset [7] "Tower Hamlets council has told the developers of the Joiners site that their plans for offices and nine luxury flats will get planning permission only if it includes a pub that will “remain a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-focused venue for a minimum of 12 years”. It is believed to be the first time that the sexual orientation of a venue’s customers has been included as a condition of planning approval."[1] References1. ^1 {{cite news | url = https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/04/you-must-open-a-gay-venue-in-office-complex-planners-tell-developers | date = 4 August 2017 | accessdate = 4 August 2017 | first = Rupert | last = Neate | newspaper = The Guardian | location = London | title = You must include gay venue on site of Joiners Arms, planners tell developers}} {{Pubs in London}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Joiners Arms, The}}2. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.thejoinershoreditch.com/#!By-David-Pollard/c1ojz/AF57408A-A508-4CC7-8EA7-C2D080633CFD | title=GAY PUB WINS CASE TO KEEP LATE HOURS | publisher=Joiner's Arms | date=16 December 2013 | author=Pollard, David}} 3. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://www.gaytimes.co.uk/Magazine/InThisIssue-articleid-4896-sectionid-694.html | title=Britain's Trendiest Gay Dive | work=Gay Times Magazine | date=January 2009 | author=Henderson, Bob}} 4. ^{{cite web | url=http://daniellismore.blogspot.co.uk/2008/03/issue.html | title=JOINERS ARMS - WETYOURSELF | date=3 March 2008 | author=Lismore, Daniel}} 5. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.timeout.com/london/clubs/joiners-arms | title=Joiners Arms Review | publisher=Time Out | work=Time Out London | date=20 June 2012}} 6. ^{{cite web | url=https://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/the-joiners-arms-is-closing-and-its-a-travesty | title= The Joiners' Arms is Closing and It's a Travesty | work=Vice News | date=4 November 2014 | author=Joannou, Cliff}} 7. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.eastlondonlines.co.uk/2015/03/tower-hamlets-council-upholds-joiners-arms-community-asset-status/ | title= Council upholds Joiners Arms community asset status | work=East London Lines | date=28 March 2015 | author=Goddard, Emily}} 3 : Nightclubs in London|LGBT public houses in London|1997 establishments in England |
