ReceptionAt NPR, Amal El-Mohtar called City "(b)rilliant, compelling, and frankly unputdownable", comparing it to a Socratic dialogue,[1] while at Booklist, Michael Cart described it as a "remarkable novel of ideas", conceding that it may be somewhat "abstruse", but emphasizing that this does not detract from the quality of its plot and characterization.[2] Publishers Weekly stated that City was "impressively ambitious", but criticized Walton for overuse of sexual violence and for a "reductive" portrayal of the Greek gods.[3] Similarly, Kirkus Reviews considered the protagonists to "have a certain appeal", but stated that the novel was "more thought experiment than plot".[4]References1. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.npr.org/2015/01/15/376093453/the-consolations-and-controversies-of-philosophy-in-the-just-city|title=The Consolations (And Controversies) Of Philosophy In 'The Just City'|work=NPR|first=Amal|last=El-Mohtar|authorlink=Amal El-Mohtar|date=January 15, 2015|access-date=March 5, 2015}} {{Jo Walton}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Just City, The}}{{2010s-fantasy-novel-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.booklistonline.com/ProductInfo.aspx?pid=7141180|title=The Just City|work=Booklist|first=Michael|last=Cart|date=December 1, 2014|access-date=March 5, 2015}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-7653-3266-0|title=The Just City|work=Publishers Weekly|date=October 13, 2014|access-date=November 4, 2014}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/jo-walton/just-city/|title=The Just City by Jo Walton|work=Kirkus Reviews|date=September 16, 2014|access-date=November 4, 2014}} 1 : 2015 fantasy novels |
