Critical responseThe sculpture received a poor critical reception, being cited by Antony Gormley as "a very good example of the crap out there", comparing it to other examples of public art in the UK,[4] and later referred to as a "terrible, schmaltzy, sentimental piece of kitsch" by Tim Marlow of the Royal Academy of Arts. Jeremy Deller dismissed it as "barely a work of art".[5] Day commented that "[a] lot of people will no doubt detest it because it is not violent or controversial".[3] Further controversy was caused by Day's 2008 planned addition of a bronze relief frieze around the plinth.[6] Originally depicting a commuter falling into the path of an Underground train driven by the Grim Reaper, Day believed the piece to be a "tragi-comic style and was supposed to be a metaphor for the way people’s imaginations ran wild"[7] but revised the frieze before the final version was installed.[8] Despite harsh criticism from major figures in the British art world, the statue has become popular with the public and contributed to its perception of St Pancras. In 2011, an edition of "The World’s Most Romantic Spots" by Lonely Planet described the station as one of the most romantic meeting places in the world, citing the statue as a key reason.[9] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2007/10/10/paul_day_stpancras_feature.shtml |title=The Meeting Place|year=2007 |publisher=BBC London |accessdate=14 October 2011}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7666093.stm |title=Station bans train death artwork |date=12 October 2008 |publisher=BBC London |accessdate=14 January 2018}} 3. ^1 {{cite news |url=https://www.standard.co.uk/news/lovers-statue-installed-at-eurostar-terminal-6696531.html |title=Lovers' statue installed at Eurostar terminal |date=22 October 2007 |newspaper=Evening Standard |accessdate=14 January 2018 }} 4. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/modern-public-artworks-are-crap-says-gormley-this-is-how-it-should-be-done-791922.html?action=Gallery&ino=3 |title=Modern public artworks are 'crap', says Gormley |date=6 March 2008 |newspaper=The Independent |accessdate=14 October 2011 |location=London |first=Arifa |last=Akbar}} 5. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/royal-academy-of-arts-tim-marlow-bronze-statue-of-lovers-embracing-at-st-pancras-station-a-lesson-in-10282978.html |title=Royal Academy of Arts' Tim Marlow: Bronze statue of lovers embracing at St Pancras station is a lesson in 'how not to do' public art |date=28 May 2015 |newspaper=The Independent |accessdate=14 January 2018 |location=London |first=Nick |last=Clark}} 6. ^{{cite news |url=http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/visual_arts/article4926425.ece |title=Reaper's grim welcome at St Pancras |date=12 October 2008 |newspaper=The Sunday Times |accessdate=14 October 2011 | location=London | first=Dipesh | last=Gadher}} 7. ^{{cite news |url=http://metro.co.uk/2008/10/12/grim-reaper-driven-out-of-st-pancras-24245/ |title=Grim Reaper driven out of St Pancras |work=The Metro|date=12 October 2008 | accessdate=14 January 2018}} 8. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/st-pancras-frieze-toned-down-959411.html |title=St Pancras frieze toned down |first=Paula |last=Fentiman |work=The Independent |date=13 October 2008 | location=London|accessdate=14 October 2011}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/8733843/St-Pancras-station-named-one-of-worlds-most-romantic-spots.html|title=St Pancras station named one of world's most romantic spots|newspaper=Daily Telegraph|date=1 September 2011|accessdate=6 February 2019}} External links
