BiographyBorn in Dunedin in 1914, Allen was the son of Theodore Allen and his wife Hester Ann Watkins. He was the New Zealand 880 yards champion in 1937, in a time of 1:55.8.[1] At the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney, Allen won the first heat of the 880 yards in an Australian record time, before his compatriot Pat Boot won the second heat in a time 2.2 seconds faster than Allen's.[2] In the final, Boot won the gold medal, while Allen finished in fifth place.[3] In the 1 mile event, Allen finished fourth in his heat,[4] but in the final he did not finish, withdrawing from the race at the half-way point.[5] During World War II, Allen was a second lieutenant in the New Zealand Railway Operating Group.[6] He died in Perth, Western Australia in 2003.[7][8] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.anzrankings.org.nz/userfiles/file/National_Champions.pdf |title=National champions 1887–2014 |date=January 2015 |website= |publisher=Athletics New Zealand |accessdate=26 May 2015 | first=Stephen | last=Hollings}} {{1938 New Zealand British Empire Games team}}{{Footer New Zealand NC 800 m men}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Allen, Theo}}{{NewZealand-athletics-bio-stub}}2. ^{{cite news | url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17423041 | title=880 yards: record-breaking heats | date=7 February 1938 | work=Sydney Morning Herald | accessdate=26 May 2015 | page=17}} 3. ^{{cite news | url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article27980887 | title=Vernon Boot breaks his own record | date=8 February 1938 | work=Sydney Morning Herald | accessdate=26 May 2015 | page=15}} 4. ^{{cite news | url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17439076 | title=Games results: athletics | date=11 February 1938 | work=Sydney Morning Herald | accessdate=26 May 2015 | page=18}} 5. ^{{cite news | url=http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH19380214.2.93.2 | title=Further records | date=14 February 1938 | work=New Zealand Herald | accessdate=26 May 2015 | page=11}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=try&db=NZWWIIApptPromTransResig&h=30152 |title=New Zealand, World War II appointments, promotions, transfers and resignations, 1939–1945 |year=2014 |website= |publisher=Ancestry.com |accessdate=26 May 2015 | subscription=yes}} 7. ^{{cite news | title=War service stifles Olympic medal dream | date=22 November 2003 | work=Otago Daily Times | page=39}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www2.mcb.wa.gov.au/NameSearch/details.php?id=KC00156486 |title=Summary of record information |date= |website= |publisher=Metropolitan Cemeteries Board |accessdate=26 May 2015}} 7 : 1914 births|2003 deaths|Sportspeople from Dunedin|New Zealand male middle-distance runners|Commonwealth Games competitors for New Zealand|Athletes (track and field) at the 1938 British Empire Games|New Zealand military personnel of World War II |
