The plot of The Ponder Heart follows Daniel Ponder, a wealthy heir, and is told through the narration of Edna Earle Ponder, Daniel's niece. In 1956, the story was made into a Broadway play by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov. Una Merkel won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Edna Earle Ponder in the Broadway play. PlotThe novella is set in fictional rural Clay County, Mississippi, home to the Ponders, the richest family in the county. Daniel Ponder, a "mildly retarded man" according to literary scholars,[2][3][4] is the heir to his father Sam Ponder's wealth. As Daniel generously gives away his possessions, including a gas station and heirloom watches, his father and his niece, Edna Earle Ponder, try to save their family fortune by having Daniel institutionalized to a psychiatric hospital. When Sam instead of Daniel is institutionalized by accident, the two try to have Daniel marry Teacake Magee, an eligible widow. The marriage only lasts two months. Daniel later marries 17-year-old Bonnie Dee Peacock, and Daniel's father dies of a heart attack when he hears of the proposal.[5] Bonnie runs away, and later returns to Daniel's house. She dies mysteriously on a stormy night. The Peacocks, under the advice of district attorney Dorris Gladney, indict Daniel on murder charges. He convinces the judge he is innocent, and gives away the remainder of his riches to all present at the trial, including the Peacocks.[2] The novella is narrated through the perspective of Edna Earle.[6] AdaptionsA play was adapted from The Ponder Heart, which ran on Broadway from February 16, 1956, to June 23, 1956.[7] Portraying Edna Earle Ponder, Una Merkel won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance,[8] while Ben Edwards was nominated for a Tony Award for scenic design.[9] The Public Broadcasting Service also adapted the novella to a television film directed by Martha Coolidge as a part of the Masterpiece series in October 2001.[10] ReceptionThe story received generally positive review from critics; Welty scholar Pearl Amelia McHaney called The Ponder Heart the "most positively received of Welty's books".[11] Charles Poore of the New York Times called the novel "a wonderful tragicomedy of good intentions in a durably sinful world".[12] References1. ^{{cite book|title=Seven American Women Writers of the Twentieth Century: an Introduction|last=Howard|first=Maureen|year=1977|page=212|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=FlebQxdsZv8C|publisher=University of Minnesota Press|isbn=978-0-8166-0796-9}} Bibliography{{cite book|title=Eudora Welty: the Contemporary Reviews|last=McHaney|first=Pearl Amelia|year=2005|publisher=Cambridge University Press|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=An4FBx15ckIC|isbn=978-0-521-65317-6|ref=CITEREFMcHaney2005}}2. ^1 {{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=xghXlxtkb3sC|title=Twentieth-century Southern Literature|year=1997|last=Bryant|first=Joseph Allen|pages=143–144|publisher=University Press of Kentucky|isbn=978-0-8131-0937-4}} 3. ^{{Cite journal | last1 = Snyder | first1 = L. | title = Rhetoric in "The Ponder Heart" | journal = The Southern Literary Journal | volume = 21 | issue = 2 | pages = 17–26 | doi = | year = 1989 | pmid = | pmc = }} 4. ^{{cite book|title=Seven American Women Writers of the Twentieth Century: an Introduction|last=Howard|first=Maureen|publisher=University of Minnesota Press|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=FlebQxdsZv8C|page=194|isbn=978-0-8166-0796-9|year=1977}} 5. ^{{cite book|title=Faulkner and Welty and the Southern Literary Tradition|page=103|last1=Chouard|first1=Géraldine|last2=Pitavy-Souques|first2=Danièle|last3=Baris|first3=Sharon|year=2005|publisher=Presses Universitaires de Rennes}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Don't Miss Uncle Daniel Ponder|last=Jackson|first=Joseph Henry|newspaper=San Francisco Chronicle|publisher=Hearst Corporation|date=January 19, 1954|page=15}} In {{harvnb|McHaney|2005|p=106}} 7. ^{{cite book|title=John Willis' theatre world: Volume 12|last=Willis|first=John|publisher=Crown Publishing Group|page=94}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Merkel dies at 82|date=January 6, 1986|publisher=Postmedia Network|newspaper=The Gazette|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=xX4xAAAAIBAJ&sjid=4KUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=998,2325856|accessdate=January 14, 2012}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/archive/pastwinners/index.html|title=Search Past Winners|publisher=American Theatre Wing|accessdate=January 24, 2012|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120204062042/http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/archive/pastwinners/index.html|archivedate=February 4, 2012|df=}} Note: User must select the "Scenic Design" category as the award under the search feature. 10. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/americancollection/ponder/index.html|title=The Ponder Heart|publisher=Public Broadcasting Service|accessdate=January 16, 2012}} 11. ^{{harvnb|McHaney|2005|p=xi}} 12. ^{{cite news|title=Books of the Times|date=January 7, 1954|publisher=The New York Times Company|newspaper=The New York Times|last=Poore|first=Charles}} In {{harvnb|McHaney|2005|p=99}} External links
