Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series,[1] the album presents the tango music of Argentina with an eye toward the history of the genre, featuring 78 rpm recordings to tracks of the modern day.[2] Teddy Peiro and Tom Andrews wrote the liner notes, and Phil Stanton—co-founder of the World Music Network—produced and compiled the album.[2][3] This release was followed by a second edition a decade later. Critical reception{{Album ratings| rev1 = Allmusic | rev1Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[4] }} Alex Henderson of AllMusic called the album "far-reaching", demarcating within the tracks the "two types of tango: before and after Astor Piazzolla" (whose influence on the genre, he claimed, was comparable to that of Charlie Parker's on jazz).[4] Track listing{{tracklist| extra_column = Artist | title1 = Aguafuertes Portenas | extra1 = Litto Nebbia | length1 = 1:48 | title2 = Tango de los Abuelos, los Padres y los Hijos | extra2 = Roberto Goyeneche | length2 = 3:49 | title3 = Afiche | extra3 = Adriana Varela | length3 = 3:17 | title4 = Tres Minutos con la Realidad | extra4 = Astor Piazzolla | length4 = 3:05 | title5 = El Bazar de los Juguetes | extra5 = Alberto Podestá | length5 = 2:46 | title6 = Cafe Homero | extra6 = Néstor Marconi | length6 = 6:50 | title7 = 200 Años | extra7 = Agri, Binelli, & Fedel y Ferrer | length7 = 1:54 | title8 = Lilian | extra8 = Héctor Varela | length8 = 3:10 | title9 = Danzarin | extra9 = Leopoldo Federico & Roberto Grela | length9 = 3:52 | title10 = Cada Vez Que Me Recuerdes | extra10 = Adriana Varela | length10 = 2:37 | title11 = Melancolico Buenos Aires | extra11 = Astor Piazzolla | length11 = 4:03 | title12 = El Ultimo Guapo | extra12 = Alfredo Belusi | length12 = 2:30 | title13 = Orlando Goñi | extra13 = Aníbal Troilo | length13 = 3:56 | title14 = Caminito | extra14 = Carlos Gardel | length14 = 2:37 | title15 = Cuando Tu No Estas | extra15 = Néstor Marconi | length15 = 5:45 | title16 = Retrato de Nana | extra16 = Carlos Buono | length16 = 3:08 | title17 = El Tiempo Sera Testigo | extra17 = Héctor Varela | length17 = 2:55 | title18 = El Marne | extra18 = Eduardo Arolas | length18 = 2:30 | title19 = La Cumparsita | extra19 = Los Solistas d'Arienzo | length19 = 2:45 | title20 = Farol | extra20 = Virgilio Exposito | length20 = 3:14 }} References1. ^ {{cite web | url = http://www.folklib.net/index/discog/labels/rough2_guide.shtml | title = Rough Guide Discography / World Music Network Discography | accessdate = 2013-12-21 | last = Douglas H. | first = Henkle | date = 2012-10-23 | work = FolkLib Index : A Library of Folk Music Links}} 2. ^{{cite web | url = http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Rough-Guide-To-Tango/release/3059865 | title = Various – The Rough Guide To Tango | accessdate = 19 Jan 2014 | author = Discogs|publisher= Zink Media, Inc.}} 3. ^{{cite web | url = http://www.worldmusic.net/network/about-us/ | title = About Us - The WMN Story | accessdate = 2013-12-21 | author = World Music Network}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-rough-guide-to-tango-mw0000667217|publisher=Allmusic|first=Alex|last=Henderson|title=The Rough Guide to Tango|accessdate=17 Jan 2014}} External links
