It was written by John L. Bell in 1987. HistoryBell composed "The Summons" after being accepted into the Iona Community in 1980.[2] It was first included in the Iona Community's Heaven Shall Not Wait: Songs of Creation, the Incarnation, and the Life of Jesus, published by their Wild Goose Resource Group in 1987. "The Summons" has been published in many hymn books beyond the Iona Community and the United Kingdom, including those by the United Church of Canada and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).[2][3] It also appears in “Wonder, Love, and Praise,” the addendum hymnal of the Episcopal Church (United States). Composition and usage"The Summons" is set to the tune of Kelvingrove, a traditional Scottish melody. Its text contains thirteen questions asked by Jesus in the first person.[5][4] The initial four stanzas with the questions are in Jesus' voice, and the fifth stanza is the singer's response to them.[1] The hymn is based on Mark 1:16–20 and alludes to Jesus calling his disciples to follow him.[5] C. Michael Hawn calls it a prophetic Christian hymn and mentioned that it contains words uncommon to other hymns.[6] It has been used as an example of how a Christian should react to fear and love[7] as well as being written as an example of covenantal discipleship.[8] The hymn is used as a vocational and youth hymn because the words are easier to learn for younger people compared with other hymns.[9] In 2014, the hymn was used at Blackburn Cathedral at a service performed by the Bishop of Blackburn to commemorate 20 years since the first ordination of women in the Church of England as well as the Diocese of Blackburn's decision to support the ordination of women as bishops in the Church of England.[10] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.hymnary.org/text/will_you_come_and_follow_me |title=The Summons |publisher=Hymnary.org |date= |accessdate=2014-05-13}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.hymnary.org/instances?qu=in%3Ainstances%20textAuthNumber%3Awill_you_come_and_follow_me&sort=hymnalTitle |title=All Instances, The Summons |publisher=Hymnary.org |date= |accessdate=2014-05-13}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.hymnary.org/hymnal/GG2013?page=7 |title=Glory to God: the Presbyterian Hymnal|publisher=Hymnary.org |date= |accessdate=2014-05-30}} 4. ^{{cite web|author= |url=http://www.singingthefaithplus.org.uk/?p=847 |title=Where can we find you, Lord Jesus our Master? |publisher=Methodist Church of Great Britain |date= |accessdate=2014-06-09}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|last=Vroege |first=David A. |url=http://www.reformedworship.org/article/december-2001/songs-iona |title=Songs from Iona |publisher=Reformed Worship |date= |accessdate=2014-05-13}} 6. ^1 {{cite web|author= |url=http://www.gbod.org/lead-your-church/history-of-hymns/resource/history-of-hymns-the-summons |title=History of Hymns | The Summons |publisher=GBOD |date= |accessdate=2014-05-13}} 7. ^{{cite book | first =Eva | last =McIntyre | title =A Quiet Mind: Uniting Body, Mind and Emotions in Christian Spirituality | publisher = John Hunt Publishing | edition = | year = 2011| isbn = 1780990057 | page = 26}} 8. ^{{cite book | first =Kenneth | last =Cuthbertson | title =The Last Presbyterian?: Remembering the Faith of My Forebears| publisher = Wipf and Stock Publishers | edition = | year = 2013| isbn = 1620328704 | page = 95}} 9. ^{{cite book | first =Tim | last =Sledge | title =Get a Life!: Life Goals for Young People| publisher = Church House Publishing | edition = | year = 2008| isbn = 1620328704 | page = 46}} 10. ^{{cite web|author= |url=http://www.lep.co.uk/news/special-service-to-mark-20-years-of-women-s-ministry-1-6629019 |title=Special service to mark 20 years of women’s ministry |work=Lancashire Evening Post |date= |accessdate=2014-06-09}} External links
