HistoryThe first Tiny Desk Concert came about in 2008 after Boilen and NPR Music editor Stephen Thompson left a bar show frustrated that they couldn't hear the music over the crowd noise.[1] Thompson joked that the musician, folk singer Laura Gibson, should just perform at Boilen's desk. A month later Boilen arranged for her to do just that, making an impromptu recording and posting it online.[2] The name is taken from Boilen's 1970s psychedelic dance band called Tiny Desk Unit.[3] ConcertsAs of August 2018, the series included more than 800 concerts viewed a collective 2 billion times on YouTube.[2] The series has sometimes drawn criticism for narrowness in the musical genres it includes—described as focused on "hipster-infused indie rock" by Zachary Crockett at Vox[2]—to the exclusion of genres like country and hip-hop.[4] However reviewers also say the series' musical focus has broadened in scope over time.[2][5] Performer Anderson Paak's appearance on the series is Tiny Desk Concerts' most popular video with 32.73 million views (as of 6 April 2019) surpassing (from November 2017) the previous #1 viewed video of T-Pain, seen 14.96 million times.[2] Tiny Desk ContestIn December 2014, NPR announced it would host its first contest, inviting musicians to submit a video of one of their songs.[10] A jury of musicians and NPR staff choose a winner to play a Tiny Desk Concert. The contest has continued annually, each year drawing more than 6000 submissions.[10][12][13] Jurors have included Trey Anastasio of Phish,[13] Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, and Jess Wolfe of Lucius.[6] Tiny Desk Contest winners have been Fantastic Negrito (2015),[7] Gaelynn Lea (2016),[8] Tank and the Bangas (2017),[9] and Naia Izumi (2018).[10] While not winning the 2018 contest, contestants Hobo Johnson and the LoveMakers were also invited to record an episode which aired on September 12.[11] References1. ^{{cite news|last1=Burton|first1=Scott|title=Tiny Desk Concert contest not so tiny|url=http://www.ktoo.org/features/tiny-desk-concert/|accessdate=28 February 2017|work=KTOO|date=February 2015}} 2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news|last1=Crockett|first1=Zachary|title=Tiny Desk: how NPR’s intimate concert series earned a cult following|url=https://www.vox.com/culture/2016/11/21/13550754/npr-tiny-desk-concert|accessdate=28 February 2017|work=Vox|date=November 21, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite news|last1=Hilton|first1=Robin|title=All Songs At 15: Our First Ever Tiny Desk Concert|url=https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2015/02/12/385532517/all-songs-at-15-our-first-ever-tiny-desk-concert|accessdate=3 October 2018|work=NPR All Songs Considered|date=February 12, 2015}} 4. ^{{cite news|last1=Moore|first1=Marcus J.|title=How ‘All Songs Considered’s’ Bob Boilen went from Tiny Desk to tastemaker|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/how-all-songs-considereds-bob-boilen-went-from-tiny-desk-to-tastemaker/2016/04/08/354beb44-e492-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html|accessdate=28 February 2017|work=The Washington Post|date=8 April 2016}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2017/02/hip-hop-npr-tiny-desk-concert-series/|title=11 Times Hip-Hop Connected With NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series|last=Preezy|first=|date=February 21, 2017|work=XXL Magazine|access-date=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.startribune.com/duluth-singer-songwriter-gaelynn-lea-wins-npr-s-tiny-desk-contest/370928351/|title=Duluth singer/fiddler Gaelynn Lea wins NPR's Tiny Desk Contest|last=Riemenschneider|first=Chris|date=March 3, 2016|newspaper=Star Tribune|access-date=2017-02-26|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|work=|via=}} 7. ^1 2 {{cite news|last1=Falk|first1=Tyler|title=‘Soul is just right there’ for the winner of NPR’s Tiny Desk contest|url=http://current.org/2015/02/soul-is-just-right-there-for-the-winner-of-nprs-tiny-desk-contest/|accessdate=28 February 2017|work=Current|date=February 17, 2015}} 8. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Segal|first1=Corinne|title='Tiny Desk' winner on why musicians with disabilities are an 'unequal minority'|url=https://www.pbs.org/newshour/art/tiny-desk-winner-on-why-musicians-with-disabilities-are-an-unequal-minority/|accessdate=28 February 2017|work=PBS NewsHour|date=March 9, 2016}} 9. ^1 2 {{cite news|last1=Morris|first1=Melinda|title=Tank and the Bangas beat out 6,000 to win NPR's Tiny Desk Contest |url=http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2017/02/tank_and_the_bangas_beat_out_6.html|accessdate=28 February 2017|work=The Times-Picayune|date=February 28, 2017}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2018/04/24/604937775/announcing-the-2018-tiny-desk-contest-winner | title=Announcing The 2018 Tiny Desk Contest Winner |last=Boilen |first=Bob |work=NPR Music |date=April 24, 2018 |accessdate=April 24, 2018}} 11. ^{{cite news |last=Miller |first=Nick |date=2018-09-12 |title=Watch Sacramento’s Hobo Johnson On NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ (Spoiler: There’s Scones) |url=http://www.capradio.org/articles/2018/09/12/watch-sacramentos-hobo-johnson-on-nprs-tiny-desk-concert-spoiler-theres-scones/ |work=Capital Public Radio |location=Sacramento, CA |access-date=2018-10-02 }} External links
