Thomas Joseph (Tom) Markham (14 December 1878-15 June 1939) founded two Gaelic Athletic Association clubs in Dublin.[1] After his death, funds were collected to provide the Tom Markham Memorial Cup, which was awarded annually to the county which won the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship from 1940 to 2013. LifeThomas Markham was born in Cragbrien, County Clare, on 14 December 1878, son of John Markham and Bridget Slattery.[2] He was a civil servant residing in Dublin when he married Agnes Daly in Ballycorick Church on 17 July 1907.[3] By 1911, he was an Assistant Clerk in the Local Government Board, and was using the Irish-language version of his name, Tomás Ua Marcacáin.[4] He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1912, working as an intelligence officer for Michael Collins.[1] He died at his residence, 25 Windsor Avenue, in Fairview, on 15 June 1939.[5] LegacySoon after Tom Markham's death, a committee was established which raised the funds to provide the Tom Markham Memorial Cup in his memory.[6] The original cup was replaced in 2014.[7] References1. ^1 [https://www.the42.ie/dr-tom-markham-football-finance-interview-3750025-Dec2017/ Dr Tom Markham interview] {{DEFAULTSORT:Markham, Tom}}2. ^[https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1879/02926/2072402.pdf Birth certificate.] 3. ^[https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1907/10101/5675113.pdf Marriage certificate.] 4. ^Census return. 5. ^[https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1939/04745/4270697.pdf Death certificate.] 6. ^Irish Press, Friday, June 16, 1939, Page 9; Evening Herald, Saturday, June 29, 1940, Page 3;Irish Press, Saturday, September 14, 1940, Page 3;Irish Independent, Friday, September 20, 1940, Page 7;Irish Press, Monday, September 23, 1940, Page 10. 7. ^New Tom Markham Cup commissioned. 4 : Gaelic football people|People from County Clare|1878 births|1939 deaths |
