Nelssen earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1973), Master of Arts - Secondary Education (1975), and a Master of Fine Arts (1976) from Arizona State University (ASU). He taught Computer Arts and Photography at ASU's College of Architecture and the ASU Art Department; Phoenix College; Scottsdale Community College; and at Paradise Valley Community College.[2] As an outdoorsman, photographer, and educator, Nelssen was always keen to share his love of the Sonoran Desert and capturing images of it to share with others.[3] Tony Nelssen was elected with the highest number of votes in the March 2006 election.[4] While in office he continued his legacy of volunteer public service, and continued to attend city council meetings telephonically even after falling ill, until his death on May 26, 2010.[5] Nelssen was campaigning for re-election at the time of his death. Nelssen was survived by his widow, Margaret Elizabeth Widing "Marg" Nelssen; son Ian Anthony Nelssen; and daughter Hannah Nelssen.[6] Marg Nelssen was appointed by Tony's colleagues on the City Council to fulfill the remainder of his term.[7] After his death, the City of Scottsdale expanded its WestWorld [https://web.archive.org/web/20150220015003/http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/westworld/facilities/equidome Equidome] equestrian facility and renamed it, "The Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center".[8] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Tony Nelssen|url=http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Page6952.aspx|website=scottsdaleaz.gov|publisher=City of Scottsdale Arizona|accessdate=25 November 2014|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://archive.is/20141111005410/http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Page6952.aspx|archivedate=11 November 2014|df=}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Nelssen, Tony}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Tony Nelssen Scottsdale city councilman resume|url=http://nelssen.tripod.com/Resume.htm|website=http://nelssen.tripod.com|publisher=Tony Nelssen|accessdate=25 November 2014}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Arizona loses truly unique cowboy|url=http://jsemmel.wordpress.com/2010/06/20/arizona-loses-truly-unique-cowboy/|website=http://jsemmel.wordpress.com|publisher=Janice Semmel|accessdate=25 November 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Resolution No. 6861|url=http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Assets/Public+Website/elections/031406returns.pdf|website=scottsdaleaz.gov|publisher=City of Scottsdale Arizona|accessdate=25 November 2014}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Scottsdale Councilman Nelssen dies after battle with cancer|url=http://www.azcentral.com/community/scottsdale/articles/2010/05/26/20100526scottsdale-councilman-tony-nelssen-dies.html|website=azcentral.com|publisher=Arizona Republic|accessdate=25 November 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Late Scottsdale councilman's personal side recalled|url=http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/06/07/20100607scottsdale-councilman-nelssen-remembered.html|website=azcentral.com|publisher=Arizona Republic|accessdate=25 November 2014}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Marg Nelssen|url=http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Page11738.aspx|website=scottsdaleaz.gov|publisher=City of Scottsdale|accessdate=17 January 2015|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://archive.is/20150119042535/http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Page11738.aspx|archivedate=19 January 2015|df=}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center expansion|url=http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/westworld/EquidomeExpansion|website=scottsdaleaz.gov|publisher=City of Scottsdale Arizona|accessdate=25 November 2014|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141001032442/http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/westworld/EquidomeExpansion|archivedate=1 October 2014|df=}} 6 : 20th-century births|2010 deaths|Arizona city council members|Arizona State University alumni|Deaths from cancer in Arizona|Educators from Arizona |
