Kanal is the bassist for the American rock bands No Doubt and Dreamcar. His musical work outside of the band includes producing and songwriting with artists such as reggae singer Elan Atias and No Doubt bandmate Gwen Stefani, among others. Early lifeKanal was born in Kingsbury, a northwest district of London, England. Kanal's father Gulab and his mother Lajwanti "Lajju" are from India.[1][2] His parents emigrated from India to London, England, where Kanal was born.{{cn|date=February 2019}} While most of his early years were spent in London, Kanal and his family also briefly lived in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Munster, Indiana, before eventually returning to London. At age eleven, his family once again moved to the United States, where the Kanal family settled in Anaheim, California.[1] There, his parents opened a store named "Kanal's Gifts and Fashion".[3] Kanal attended South Junior High School and Anaheim High School. Upon entering seventh grade, Kanal decided to join his junior high school concert band, Kanal's father suggested that Kanal learn to play the saxophone since it was the former's favorite instrument.[2] Kanal later learned how to play the bass with assistance from his schoolmate Dave Carpenter.[1] CareerEarly beginnings and No DoubtAfter being invited to No Doubt's first official club show on March 14, 1987 by original drummer and fellow Anaheim High School student Chris Webb,[4] Kanal joined the band as its bassist at age 16.[5][6] After high school, Kanal enrolled at California State University, Fullerton to major in psychology.[1] In 1991, No Doubt signed with Interscope Records and began recording their first full-length album.[7] Their self-titled debut was released in 1992, and that year they embarked on three U.S. van tours, playing clubs and theaters. Over the next decade, No Doubt released the albums Tragic Kingdom (1995),[8] The Beacon Street Collection (1995), Return of Saturn (2000),[9] Rock Steady (2001),[10] as well as two compilation albums, The Singles 1992-2003 (2003) [11] and Everything In Time: B-Sides, Rarities, Remixes (2004).[12] The band toured the world and earned several awards, including two Grammy Awards and 5 MTV Music Video Awards. 2004-2014: No Doubt hiatus, writing, and producingIn 2004, after touring the U.S. to promote The Singles 1992-2003, No Doubt went on hiatus. During this time, Kanal began producing and writing outside of the band. That same year, Kanal produced three songs for the soundtrack to 50 First Dates.[13] Also in 2004, Kanal produced and co-wrote three tracks on Gwen Stefani's first solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.[14] Kanal then produced Elan Atias's debut album, Together as One, which was released in June 2006.[15] Kanal again worked with Gwen Stefani for her follow-up solo album The Sweet Escape, released in 2006.[16] He created several remixes, including ones of Stefani's "Hollaback Girl"[17] and Gang of Four's "Ether".[17] Kanal produced the song "Rent" for the ska punk band Pepper's 2006 album No Shame.[18] In 2008, he collaborated on two songs titled "Sober" and "Funhouse" with Pink for her album Funhouse[19] and also sang back-up on "Crystal Ball". In late 2009, Kanal co-wrote and played bass for a song of former Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt's debut solo album.[20] Kanal also co-wrote the song "Smart Girls" for Weezer's 2010 album Hurley.[21] In 2010, Kanal co-wrote, produced, and performed bass on the track "Kiss You Up", recorded by Barbadian artist Shontelle for her second album, No Gravity.[22] With Stefani promoting her second solo album, No Doubt began initial work on a new album without her[23] and planned to complete it after Stefani's tour was finished.[24] In March 2008, the band started making posts concerning the progression of the album on their official fan forum. Stefani made a post on 28 March 2008 stating that songwriting had commenced but was slow on her end because she was, at the time, pregnant with her second child.[25] In 2009, No Doubt made an appearance on the television series Gossip Girl, playing a fictional band called "Snowed Out" in the episode "Valley Girls".[28] They performed their cover version of the Adam and the Ants song "Stand and Deliver".[29] In 2012, No Doubt released Push and Shove, their most recent release. They celebrated the album by performing seven sold out shows in Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheater.[30] In 2014 and 2015, they played the Global Citizens Festivals in New York City and Washington D.C. and headlined music festivals in the United States.[31] 2014-present: DREAMCAR and other bandsIn 2014, Kanal and No Doubt bandmates Tom Dumont and Adrian Young, along with Davey Havok of AFI, formed the band DREAMCAR. They released their debut self-titled album through Columbia Records in 2017 and toured the U.S. to support it, including performances at the Coachella Festival.[32] In October 2018, Kanal joined Danny Elfman during the encore of his three Nightmare Before Christmas shows at the Hollywood Bowl to play Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party".[33] On October 31, Kanal performed a set of 8 Red Hot Chili Peppers songs with musicians Adam Levine, Chad Smith, Andrew Watt, and Darren Criss at Maroon 5's annual Halloween party in Los Angeles.[34] In December 2018, Kanal played bass for The Offspring on their Australian festival headline tour. In January 2019, Kanal again joined the band for their tour in Japan.[35][36] Personal lifeDuring a party where No Doubt performed in mid-1987, Stefani tried to kiss Kanal when the two went for a walk.[37] Kanal initially rejected her, later commenting, "It was pretty much an unspoken rule that nobody dates Gwen...almost like a bunch of brothers and our sister."[38] He gave in, and the two began dating secretly. The band was suspicious of them, warning Kanal against dating her, but he denied the relationship.[37] While the band was working on its third album Tragic Kingdom, Kanal broke up with Stefani. She later explained that he was feeling "claustrophobic" in the relationship since he did not have any previous experience being in one. She stated that the break-up "took ages" because the two were close friends and Kanal did not want to hurt her. After the break-up, he offered to leave the band, but Stefani replied that she wanted him to stay.[37] Many of the songs on that album were written by Stefani about the breakup, most notably "Don't Speak".[39] Many years later, Stefani co-wrote her song "Cool" about their relationship as friends for her 2004 debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.[40] Kanal is married to American actress Erin Lokitz,[41] and they have two daughters.[42][43] Kanal is a vegan[44][45] and animal rights activist. In addition to promoting and speaking publicly about animal rights issues, he has supported animal rights organizations including Farm Sanctuary[46] and numerous hen rescues with Animal Place.[47] Musical equipmentKanal has endorsed Yamaha basses which he runs through Gallien-Krueger heads into Ampeg cabinets.[48] Discography
