The Towner Railway, under lease from the Colorado, Kansas, and Pacific Railway Company by the Victoria and Southern Railway (V&S), was purchased by the Colorado Department of Transportation in October 2011. The track consists of 122 miles of a former Missouri Pacific Railroad line east from interchanges with Union Pacific and BNSF at North Avondale Junction to Towner, Colorado, where it interchanges with the Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad. V&S had applied to abandon the line from North Avondale Junction to Eads, with the intention of removing the line and selling the materials as scrap for immediate cash.
