It is the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Tororo District. There are many shops, banks, supermarkets here. Tororo is a trading hub where many people come from the surrounding villages to work. There are a number of ATM's around town with one at Barclay's accepting all major cards. MTN and Airtel mobile agents are throughout the town. ==History==Tororo was garrisoned by the Uganda Army's Air and Sea Battalion during the Uganda–Tanzania War (1978–79). On 2 March 1979, rebels loyal to Milton Obote attacked the town, whereupon part of the garrison defected while the rest was routed. Tororo was recaptured by the Uganda Army in a counter-attack two days later,{{sfn|Cooper|Fontanellaz|2015|p=62}}[{{cite news| last = Darnton| first = John| title = Amin's Rule in Uganda Imperiled As Tanzanian Force Nears Capital| newspaper = New York Times| date = 5 March 1979| url = https://www.nytimes.com/1979/03/05/archives/amins-rule-in-uganda-imperiled-as-tanzanian-force-nears-capital.html |access-date=22 December 2018 }}] 2. ^{{cite news| last = McManus| first = James| title = Amin's mutinous troops create a second front front| newspaper = The Guardian| date = 3 March 1979| url = https://www.newspapers.com/clip/20713029/mars_3_1979_p_1/ |access-date=22 December 2018 }} 3. ^{{cite web| title=Distance between Post Office Building, Kampala Road, Kampala, Uganda and Tororo Post Office, Malakisi Rd, Tororo, Uganda |access-date=26 February 2018 | url=https://distancecalculator.globefeed.com/Uganda_Distance_Result.asp?fromplace=Post%20Office%20Building%2C%20Kampala%20Road%2C%20Kampala%2C%20Uganda&toplace=Tororo%20Post%20Office%2C%20Malakisi%20Rd%2C%20Tororo%2C%20Uganda&dt1=ChIJXyfX9IC8fRcRorrkbY-nufI&dt2=ChIJo7piWGRrfxcR05tXT6m5fl0 |date=26 February 2018 |publisher=Globefeed.com |author=Globefeed.com}} 4. ^{{google maps |title=Location of Tororo, Tororo District, Uganda |url=https://www.google.com/maps/place/0%C2%B041'34.0%22N+34%C2%B010'54.0%22E/@0.69278,34.181655,3207m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0 |access-date=26 February 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.ubos.org/onlinefiles/uploads/ubos/pdf%20documents/TP52010.pdf | title=Estimated Population of Tororo In 2002, 2010 & 2011 | publisher=Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) | last=UBOS | accessdate=11 May 2014}} 6. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://citypopulation.de/Uganda-Cities.html | title=The Population of The Regions of the Republic of Uganda And All Cities And Towns of More Than 15,000 Inhabitants | date=27 August 2014 | accessdate=26 February 2015 | last=UBOS | publisher=Citypopulation.de Quoting Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS)}} 7. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/220/575407 | title=Cement shortage pushes retail price to sh25,000 | publisher=New Vision | date=11 July 2007 | first=Peter | last=Kaujju | accessdate=26 July 2015}} 8. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/13/723797 | title=Power cuts to go - Museveni | date=24 June 2010 | publisher=New Vision | first=Henry Mukasa and Moses Nampala | last=Ibrahim Kasita | accessdate=26 July 2015}} 9. ^{{cite web | title=Madhvani to invest $535m in Tororo phosphates mining | publisher=New Vision | date=12 May 2008 | accessdate=26 July 2015 | url=http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/220/627449 | first=Kiganda | last=Ssonko}} 10. ^{{cite web | accessdate=26 July 2015 | url=http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/news/africa/single-view/view/ugandas-northern-line-reopens.html | title=Uganda's Northern Line revived | first=Writers | last=Staff | date=9 October 2013 | publisher=Railway Gazette International}} 11. ^{{Cite web|url=https://weatherspark.com/history/29329/2013/Tororo-Eastern-Region-Uganda|title=Average Weather in Tororo, Uganda, Year Round - Weather Spark|website=weatherspark.com|language=en|access-date=2017-07-06}} 12. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.climatedata.eu/climate.php?loc=ugzz0007&lang=en|title=Climate Tororo - Uganda|last=Summerweb|website=www.climatedata.eu|language=en|access-date=2017-07-06}} 13. ^"Top 10 facts about thunder", Daily Express, 6 June 2014, accessed 23 November 2016 14. ^{{cite web | date=25 July 2012 | url=http://www.newvision.co.ug/news/633376-delayed-tororo-mbale-soroti-road-to-cost-more-money.html | accessdate=29 August 2015| title=Delayed Tororo-Mbale-Soroti road to cost more money | first=Henry | last=Sekanjako | location=Kampala | newspaper=New Vision}}
