Opened on {{Start date|1925|10|16|df=y}},[1] it gradually replaced Southend-on-Sea Corporation Tramways. By the standards of the various now-defunct trolleybus systems in the United Kingdom, the Southend system was a moderately sized one, with a total of 4 routes, and a maximum fleet of 34 trolleybuses. The fleet included the only trolleybus built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company.{{sfn| Klapper |1974 |p=272}} which was sold to the Corporation after it had been exhibited at the London Commercial Motor Show in 1933.[2] The system was closed relatively early, on {{End date|1954|10|28|df=y}}. [1]None of the former Southend trolleybuses is recorded as having been preserved.[7] See also{{portal|Buses|England}}
