It encompasses 241 contributing buildings in a primarily residential section of Portsmouth. It was developed between 1918 and 1920 as a planned community of Colonial Revival style single family residences. It was developed by the United States Housing Corporation as a result of the rapid influx of workers at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War I. It was the first wartime government housing project constructed exclusively for African-American residents.[3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=19 March 2013|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130921053819/http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|archivedate=21 September 2013|df=}} {{National Register of Historic Places in Virginia}}{{PortsmouthVA-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Cities/Portsmouth/124-0047_Truxtun_HD_1982_Final_Nomination.pdf |title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Truxtun Historic District |author=Lisbeth Lund Coke |date=April 1980 |publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources }} and Accompanying photo and Accompanying map {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120927025625/http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Cities/Portsmouth/Portsmouth_20101005.pdf |date=2012-09-27 }} 5 : African-American history of Virginia|Historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places in Virginia|Colonial Revival architecture in Virginia|Buildings and structures in Portsmouth, Virginia|National Register of Historic Places in Portsmouth, Virginia |
