The contest is an inaugural competition, and was held in Eskişehir, Turkey.[3] Twenty-four Turkic areas, which have either a large Turkic population or a widely spoken Turkic language, participated in the contest. According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 711,396.[6] The city is located on the banks of the Porsuk River, 792 m above sea level, where it overlooks the fertile Phrygian Valley. In the nearby hills one can find hot springs. The city is {{convert|233|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} to the west of Ankara, {{convert|330|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} to the southeast of Istanbul and {{convert|78|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} to the northeast of Kütahya. Known as a university town, both Eskişehir Osmangazi University and Anadolu University (which has one of the largest student enrollments in the world) are based in Eskişehir. The province covers an area of {{convert|2678|km2|sqmi|0|abbr=on}}.[7] FormatThe contest consisted of a semi-final held on 19 December 2013, and a grand final which took place on the evening of 21 December 2013.[3] The twenty-four participating areas took part in the semi-final, of which twelve qualified and proceeded to the grand final.[8] On 15 October 2013, it was announced that the hosts for Turkvision 2014 will be Kazan, Tatarstan.[9] Voting was done by one juror from each country, these jurors did not have to have any music industry experience. The scoring method and how each participating country/region was not announced, however they were allowed to vote for their own country/region. National host broadcasterTurkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) was the host broadcaster for the inaugural contest. The contest was broadcast by TRT on TRT Avaz, TRT Music and TRT Anadolu. ParticipationA total of twenty-four Turkic-related areas took part in the first edition of the contest.[11][10] Previously-announced competitors Turkmenistan, Chuvashia, Russia, and Xinjiang were not part of the final lineup announced on 17 December.[11] Semi-finalA semi-final took place on the 19 December. Twelve qualifiers proceeded to the grand final on 21 December 2013.[4]
