PlotUmbrella is a short story where a little girl is the principal character. Her name is Momo, which means "peach" in Japanese, and she was born in New York.[2]Momo carries the blue umbrella and wears the rubber boots that she was given on her third birthday. She asks her mother every day to use her umbrella. Momo tried to tell her mother she needed to carry the umbrella to the school because the sunshine and the wind bothered her eyes. But her mother didn't let her use the umbrella and advises her to wait until the rain comes. The rain took a long time to fall down because it was Indian summer, however, when the rain came, her umbrella was the perfect excuse to use that day. Momo was happy, the rain sound over her umbrella was a music for her. It is a fresh children's story with classic and very colorful Japanese illustrations that reflect its culture. ReceptionKirkus Reviews gave Umbrella a star review and wrote "The pictures are full of the city's moods and the child's joy in a rainy day."[3]References1. ^{{cite web|title=Umbrella, 1959 Caldecott Honor Book|url=http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecottmedal/caldecotthonors/1959honorumbrella|website=ALSC: Association for Library Service to Children|publisher=American Library Association|accessdate=10 June 2015}} {{portal|Children's literature |Visual arts }}{{child-book-stub}}2. ^{{cite book |author=Anita Silvey |year=2002 |title=The Essential Guide to Children's Books and Their Creators |publisher=Houghton Mifflin Harcourt |isbn=978-05-4734889-6 |page=225 | url=https://books.google.com.au/books?id=8GUNHGutszEC&pg=PA225&lpg=PA225&dq=taro+Yashima+umbrella+reviews&source=bl&ots=GAtqZq-IwY&sig=oDPHO41no4o3oWqTvhmMOS2SejI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCUQ6AEwBDgeahUKEwjxrIKsk5zHAhUEJ5QKHSKfDL4#v=onepage&q&f=false | accessdate=9 August 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/taro-yashima/umbrella-yashima/ |website=www.kirkusreviews.com |title=Umbrella |date=1 March 1958 |publisher=Kirkus Media LLC |accessdate=9 August 2015 }} 4 : American picture books|1958 children's books|Caldecott Honor-winning works|Viking Press books |
