It was designed and built in 1937, and is one of a number of post offices designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department under Louis A. Simon. The building is a one-story, pentagonal shaped brick building in the Georgian Revival style. Atop the entrance portico is a dome that rises above the buildings flat roof and is supported by four fluted limestone piers. The interior features murals by Auriel Bessemer picturing Indians on Analostan Island, Captain John Smith and the Indians, tobacco picking by the Lee mansion, Robert E. Lee receiving his Confederate commission in Richmond, a picnic at Great Falls, polo players at Fort Myer, and a contemporary harvest at an apple orchard.[3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 7, 1986.[2][4] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|accessdate=2013-05-12|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130921053819/http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|archive-date=2013-09-21|dead-url=yes|df=}} 2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite web|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20181102125433/https://projects.arlingtonva.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/31/2014/03/Arlington-Post-Office.pdf|archivedate=November 2, 2018|url=https://projects.arlingtonva.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/31/2014/03/Arlington-Post-Office.pdf|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory — Nomination Form: US Post Office-Arlington|first=Betty|publisher=Arlington County government|last=Bird|date=June 1985}} and [https://web.archive.org/web/20090115202913/http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Arlington/Arlington_Post_Office_photo.htm Accompanying photo] 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.dhr.virginia.gov/pdf_files/RegisterMasterList.pdf|title=Arlington County|work=Virginia Landmarks Register: National Register of Historic Places: Updated Through DHR December 14, 2017, and NPS February 14, 2018 Announcements|page=31|accessdate=November 2, 2018}} External links
