Since launching the Mars Crater Map feature in February, 2014, over 19,000 craters names have been named on the Uwingu Mars Map. Almost $100,000 has been generated for the Uwingu fund space research, education, and exploration. Uwingu Grant Fund recipients include Astronomers Without Borders, The Galileo Teacher Training Program, SEDS, Allen Telescope Array, International Dark-Sky Association and Explore Mars. Uwingu has also awarded over $15,000 in Student Research Travel Grants in 2014. The selected students, both men and women, completed their PhDs in 2014. Their research topics range from Martian and lunar science, to astrobiology, to the study of planets around other stars. The awarded Uwingu travel grants will enable these students to report their results and further their professional advancement in the scientific community.[4] On 3 March 2014, the company announced a partnership with Mars One, which is planning on using Uwingu's map of Mars in its mission.[5][6] It was announced on 12 June 2014 that a second space mission, Time Capsule to Mars, is carrying Uwingu's Mars Map to Mars as well.[7] Uwingu Team

CriticismThe International Astronomical Union has strongly condemned Uwingu, calling it a "scam" for charging money to buy planet names, stressing that the IAU is the only official authority on naming astronomical objects.[9][10] Uwingu denies these accusations, saying it represents the "people's choice" rather than any official position.[11] References1. ^{{cite web |last=Mann |first=Adam |title=Who Should Name the Craters on Mars, You or Astronomers? |url=https://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2014/03/mars-carter-name-fight/ |date=13 March 2014 |work=Wired |accessdate=13 March 2014 }} 2. ^{{cite news |last=Overbye |first=Dennis |authorlink=Dennis Overbye |title=You Won’t Meet the Beatles in Space - Plan to Liven Official Naming of Stars and Planets Hits Clunky Notes |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/05/science/plan-to-liven-official-naming-of-stars-and-planets-hits-clunky-notes.html |date=4 August 2014 |work=New York Times |accessdate=5 August 2014 }} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.uwingu.com/about-us/ |title=About |publisher=Uwingu |date=2012-10-26 |accessdate=14 April 2014}} 4. ^http://www.uwingu.com/2014/06/uwingu-awards-graduate-student-grants-for-travel-to-research-conferences/ 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mars-one.com/news/press-releases/mars-one-partners-with-uwingu-mars-crater-naming-project/ |title=partners with Uwingu Mars Crater Naming Project - Press Releases - News |publisher=Mars One |date=3 March 2014 |accessdate=14 April 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|last=Wall|first=Mike|title=New 'People's Map of Mars' To Be Used By Mars One Project|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/03/peoples-map-of-mars_n_4892362.html|publisher=Huffington Post}} 7. ^http://www.uwingu.com/2014/06/uwingu-partners-with-explore-mars-on-time-capsule-to-mars-initiative/ 8. ^https://www.uwingu.com/about-us/who-we-are/ 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.space.com/20665-planet-naming-controversy-iau-uwingu.html |title=Controversy Over Planet-Naming Contest Heats Up | Uwingu & IAU |publisher=Space.com |date=15 April 2013 |accessdate=14 April 2014}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.iau.org/public_press/news/detail/iau1402/ |title=Concerns and Considerations with the Naming of Mars Craters | Press Releases |publisher=IAU |date=1 March 2014 |accessdate=14 April 2014}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.fromquarkstoquasars.com/the-international-astronomical-union-vs-uwingu-the-battle-to-name-things-in-the-sky/ |title=The International Astronomical Union VS.
