Valdis Krebs is an American-Latvian researcher, author, and consultant in the field of social and organizational network analysis. He is the founder and chief scientist of OrgNet, LLC, and the creator of InFlow software, which Wired Magazine called one of the most advanced tools for analyzing and visualizing networks.[1] Popular Science has described Krebs as a "leading expert"[2] and a "pioneer" of network analysis,[3] while Military.com's DefenseTech blog has called him a leading authority in the field.[4] Work highlightsAfter the September 11 attacks, Krebs used public information and newspaper clippings to produce a partial map of the organization behind the attacks. The resulting paper, Uncloaking Terrorist Networks, has been called a classic, and "likely the most cited public analysis of the 9/11 network."[5] After publishing it, he was "invited to Washington to brief intelligence contractors."[6] Since 2004 Krebs has periodically published infographics showing the political polarization of American book-buying patterns.[7][8] He has claimed that the web leads people to narrower, more extreme viewpoints[1] (similar to the "bubble effect"), and suggests cultivating diversity in social networks,[9] a process he calls "network weaving".[10] Krebs has used social network maps to provide evidence of corruption,[11] help a non-profit group prosecute a slumlord conspiracy,[12] and visualize the "ecosystem" of fraud in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme scandal.[13] He has also consulted for corporate clients including IBM and Google.[11] References1. ^1 {{cite news|last=Fermoso|first=Jose|title=What Facebook and Steroid Use Have in Common|url=https://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/10/profile-from-po|accessdate=25 January 2013|newspaper=Wired.com|date=22 Oct 2008}} 2. ^{{cite news|last=Pacella|first=Rena Marie|title=Tied To a Terrorist|url=http://www.popsci.com/node/10055|accessdate=12 June 2013|newspaper=Popular Science|date=1 Aug 2006}} 3. ^{{cite news|last=Schachtman|first=Noah|title=Big Brother 101|url=http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2006-08/big-brother-101?single-page-view=true|accessdate=12 June 2013|newspaper=Popular Science|date=1 Aug 2006}} 4. ^{{cite web|last=Axe|first=David|title=NSA Sweep "Waste of Time," Analyst Says|url=http://defensetech.org/2006/05/11/nsa-sweep-waste-of-time-analyst-says/|work=DefenseTech|publisher=Military.com|accessdate=12 June 2013}} 5. ^{{cite web|last=Weinberger|first=Sharon|title=Case Study: Connecting the 9/11 Hijackers|url=http://nationalsecurityzone.org/war2-0/case-studies/september-11-hijackers/|work=War 2.0|publisher=Medill National Security Journalism Initiative|accessdate=25 January 2013}} 6. ^{{cite news|last=Keefe|first=Patrick Radden|title=Can Network Theory Thwart Terrorists?|url=https://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F40614FA3E550C718DDDAA0894DE404482|accessdate=24 January 2013|newspaper=New York Times|date=March 12, 2006}} 7. ^{{cite news|last=Eakin|first=Emily|title=Study Finds a Nation of Polarized Readers|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/13/books/study-finds-a-nation-of-polarized-readers.html?n=Top%2fReference%2fTimes%20Topics%2fPeople%2fS%2fSunstein%2c%20Cass%20R%2e|accessdate=24 January 2013|newspaper=New York Times|date=March 13, 2004}} 8. ^{{cite web|last=Sifry|first=Micah L.|title=2012 Political Book Buyers Less Polarized Than in 2008|url=http://techpresident.com/news/23005/2012-political-book-buyers-less-polarized-2008|work=TechPresident|publisher=Personal Democracy Media|accessdate=25 January 2013}} 9. ^{{cite news|last=Miemis|first=Venessa|title=Facebook: The Social Accelerator?|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/venessamiemis/2011/05/25/facebook-the-social-accelerator/|accessdate=24 January 2013|newspaper=Forbes|date=2011-05-25}} 10. ^{{cite book|last=Zolli|first=Andrew|title=Resilience : why things bounce back|publisher=Free Press|location=New York|isbn=1451683804|url=http://www.fastcompany.com/1842367/tropical-tale-tourists-networks-and-new-kind-leadership|author2=Healy, Ann Marie }} 11. ^1 {{cite news|last=Grzegorek|first=Vince|title=Local Researcher Proves Dimora Was a Hack by Mapping County Corruption|url=http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/01/18/local-researcher-proves-dimora-was-a-hack-by-mapping-county-corruption|accessdate=24 January 2013|newspaper=Scene Magazine|date=Jan 18, 2012}} 12. ^{{cite news|last=Murphy|first=Tom|title=Investigating Relationships with Social Network Analysis|url=http://technologyvoice.com/2012/02/16/investigating-relationships-with-social-network-analysis|accessdate=24 January 2013|newspaper=Technology Voice|date=2012-02-16}} 13. ^{{cite news|last=Walters|first=Helen|title=The Tangled Web of Bernard Madoff's Network|url=http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2009-02-16/the-tangled-web-of-bernard-madoffs-network|accessdate=24 January 2013|newspaper=Bloomberg Businessweek|date=February 16, 2009}} External links{{cite journal|last=Krebs|first=Valdis|title=Uncloaking Terrorist Networks|journal=First Monday|date=1 April 2002|volume=7|issue=4|url=http://firstmonday.org/htbin/cgiwrap/bin/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/941/863|accessdate=24 January 2013}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Krebs, Valdis}} 2 : Living people|Year of birth missing (living people) |
