Its range is in western Brazil.[3] The monkey is named after Brazilian zoologist Paulo Vanzolini. This species was originally described by Hershkovitz as the subspecies Pithecia irrorata vanzolinii[2][3] based on individuals collected in 1936 by Alfonso M. Olalla, but it was raised to full species status in 2014.[4] For many years, there had been no record of the species in nature. Further specimens were collected in 1956 by Fernando Novaes (the then director of the Goeldi Museum in Pará) and his assistant Miguel Moreira.[7][8] The mammals in this expedition were collected alive and prepared as museum specimens, as described by Cory T. Carvalho, the mammalogist working at the Goeldi museum at the time[5] After 61 years, in 2017, one individual was collected after being hunted for bush meat in an extractive community in the state of Acre, Brazil.[6] After not being seen alive for more than 60 years, as F. Novaes and M. Moreira collected specimens in 1956,[7] an individual was photographed in the wild in August 2017.[8] References{{Wikispecies|Pithecia vanzolinii}}1. ^1 {{cite journal | author = Marsh, L.K.; Veiga, L.M. | title = Pithecia vanzolinii | journal = IUCN Red List of Threatened Species | volume = 2015 | page = e.T43946A70609944 | publisher = IUCN | year = 2015 | url = http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/43946/0 | doi = 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2015-1.RLTS.T43946A70609944.en | accessdate = 10 September 2017}} 2. ^{{cite journal|last1= Hershkovitz|first1= P.|authorlink= Philip Hershkovitz|title=The taxonomy of south American sakis, genus Pithecia (Cebidae, Platyrrhini): A preliminary report and critical review with the description of a new species and a new subspecies|journal=American Journal of Primatology|volume= 12|issue=4|date= 1987|pages= 387–468|doi= 10.1002/ajp.1350120402}} 3. ^{{MSW3 Primates | id = 12100365 | pages = 147 | heading = Pithecia irrorata}} 4. ^1 {{cite journal|last1=Marsh|first1=L.
