Verdicenan Kadın ({{Lang-ota|ورد جنان قادين}}; 18 October 1825{{snd}}9 December 1889) was the wife of Sultan Abdulmejid I of the Ottoman Empire.{{sfn|Uluçay|2011|p=211}}

Early life

Verdicenan Kadın was born on 18 October 1825 in Sukhumi, Abkhazia. Born as Saliha Achba, she was a member of Abkhaian princely family, in the Anchabadze.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=34}} Her father was Prince Kaytuk Giorgi Bey Achba (1793–1848) and her mother was Princess Yelizaveta Hanım (1795–1843).{{sfn|Tuna|2007|p=23}} She had five elder siblings, two brothers, Prince Islam Bey and Prince Ahmet Bey,{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=34}} and two sisters, Princess Peremrüz Hanım and Princess Embruvaz Hanım,{{sfn|Tuna|2007|p=25}} and a younger brother, Prince Mehmed Bey.{{sfn|Tuna|2007|p=23}}

Saliha had been brought to Istanbul as a young child, where her father entrusted her and her sisters to the care of her Bezmiâlem Sultan, mother of Sultan Abdulmejid I, where her name according to the custom of the Ottoman court was changed to Verdicenan.{{sfn|Tuna|2007|p=25}}

Marriage

Verdicenan married Abdulmejid for a political alliance,{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=33-34}} in 1844. She was given the title of "Altıncı Kadın".{{sfn|Uluçay|2011|p=211}} Her whole family was ennobled, father, brothers and nephews. The most notorious were her brother, Islam Bey's son Rasim Bey, who was given the position of doctor in the palace and her brother Ahmet Bey's son Osman Pasha, who was given the position of aide at Sultan Abdülaziz's palace.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=35}}

On 8 December 1844, she gave birth to her first child, a daughter, Münire Sultan in the Topkapı Palace.{{sfn|Uluçay|2011|p=225}}{{sfn|Sakaoğlu|2008|p=588}} In 1845, she was given the title of "Beşinci Kadın". On 16 July 1848, she gave birth to Şehzade Ahmed Kemaleddin, in the Old Çıragan Palace.[1][2] In 1851, she was given the title of "Dördüncü Kadın", and in 1852, she was given the title of "Üçüncü Kadın".{{sfn|Uluçay|2011|p=211}}

Widowhood

After Abdulmejid's death in 1861, she moved to Feriye Palace.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=35}} In 1862, a year later, her daughter Münire Sultan died at the age of seventeen.{{sfn|Sakaoğlu|2008|p=588}}

After Gülüstü Hanım's death in 1865,[3] her daughter Mediha Sultan was entrusted in Verdicenan's care. In 1879, Verdicenan played a major role in Mediha Sultan's marriage to Samipashazade Necip Bey.[4]{{sfn|Uluçay|2011|p=211}}{{sfn|Sakaoğlu|2008|p=589}}

Death

Verdicenan Kadın died on 9 November 1889 in the Feriye Palace, and was buried in the mausoleum of the imperial ladies at the Yeni Mosque, Istanbul.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=35}}{{sfn|Uluçay|2011|p=211}}{{sfn|Sakaoğlu|2008|p=589}}
