Early lifeVince FitzGerald was schooled at St Augustine's College, Cairns.[1] FitzGerald graduated from the University of Queensland in 1969 with a Bachelor of Economics with first class honours in Econometrics, and a University Medal.[2] CareerFitzGerald joined the Australian Public Service in 1969 as a research officer with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.[2] In 1985, FitzGerald was appointed a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Trade.[3] He was promoted to Secretary of the Department in March 1986.[4] In July 1987, FitzGerald was shifted to the newly created Department of Employment, Education and Training.[5] FitzGerald left the role in 1989 to join consulting firm Geoff Allen and Associates, a higher-paid job in the private sector.[6] As a consultant, FitzGerald was the architect of the compulsory superannuation scheme introduced by the Keating Government in 1992.[7] Superannuation was later refined in response to FitzGerald's June 1993 publication National Savings: A Report to the Treasurer in which he identified the importance of national saving, and recommended ways in which national saving could be increased.[8] In 1995, Paul Keating called FitzGerald a "sour ex-bureaucrat" and claimed that FitzGerald had wanted to be Secretary of the Treasury but was upset to have never made it.[9] This was a response to a criticism FitzGerald made to aspects of a Keating Budget. AwardsIn June 2016, FitzGerald was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished services to business through executive and advisory roles in economic policy development, public administration and financial management organisations, and to the community.[10] References1. ^{{citation|url=http://www.acilallen.com.au/person/16/vince-fitzgerald|title=Vince Fitzgerald: Director, Melbourne|publisher=Acil Allen Consulting|archivedate=26 January 2014|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140126201934/http://www.acilallen.com.au/person/16/vince-fitzgerald}} {{s-start}}{{s-gov}}{{s-bef|before=John Menadue}}{{s-ttl|title=Secretary of the Department of Trade|years=1986 – 1987}}{{s-aft|after=Stuart Harris|as=Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade}}{{s-bef|before=Helen Williams|as=Secretary of the Department of Education}}{{s-ttl|title=Secretary of the Department of Employment, Education and Training|years=1987 – 1989}}{{s-aft|after=Greg Taylor}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:FitzGerald, Vince}}2. ^1 {{citation|url=http://www.uq.edu.au/economics/vince-fitzgerald|archivedate=25 April 2012|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120425022118/http://www.uq.edu.au/economics/vince-fitzgerald|deadurl=no|title=Vince FitzGerald}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article127209142|archivedate=23 February 2014|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140223010612/http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/127209142|deadurl=no|newspaper=The Canberra Times|title=Trade position filled|page=7|date=19 July 1985}} 4. ^{{citation|title=CA 3500: Department of Trade [II], Central Office|url=http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/SearchOld.asp?Number=CA+3500|publisher=National Archives of Australia|accessdate=23 February 2014}} 5. ^{{citation|title=CA 5986: Department of Employment, Education and Training, National Office|url=http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/SearchOld.asp?Number=CA+5986|publisher=National Archives of Australia|accessdate=23 February 2014}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article120858967|deadurl=no|archivedate=23 February 2014|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140223012700/http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/120858967|title=In Brief: Another DEET senior goes|date=10 November 1989|newspaper=The Canberra Times|page=5}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.smh.com.au/business/super-unfair-says-its-creator-20120406-1wh7z.html|title=Super unfair, says its creator|date=7 April 2012|first=Debra|last=Jopson|newspaper=The Sydney Morning Herald|publisher=Fairfax Media|archivedate=29 June 2012|archiveurl=http://www.smh.com.au/business/super-unfair-says-its-creator-20120406-1wh7z.html}} 8. ^{{citation|url=http://www.aga.gov.au/publications/costing_gov_super/superannuation.pdf|archivedate=24 January 2014|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140124000643/http://aga.gov.au/publications/costing_gov_super/superannuation.pdf|title=The Financing and Costing of Government Superannuation Schemes|publisher=Australian Government Actuary|page=5|first=D.B.|last=Duval|date=1994|isbn=0 644 34863 1}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article127283087|archivedate=23 February 2014|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140223011845/http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/127283087|deadurl=no|title=Keating's day of the blowtorch|first=Peter|last=Cole-Adams|page=1|newspaper=The Canberra Times|date=23 September 1995}} 10. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/queens-birthday-honours-2016-fitzgeralds-front-row-seat-on-reform/news-story/afbba5768f1a4ef95a6468184ee862a2|newspaper=The Australian|publisher=News Corp|first=Andrew|last=White|date=13 June 2016|title=Queen’s birthday honours 2016: FitzGerald’s front row seat on reform}} 6 : Living people|Secretaries of the Australian Government Education Department|Harvard University alumni|Officers of the Order of Australia|University of Queensland alumni|Year of birth missing (living people) |
