District 6 of the Virginia Senate is a senatorial district that encompasses portions of Accomack County, Mathews County, Northampton County, Norfolk and Virginia Beach in the U.S. state of Virginia. This district is currently represented by Lynwood Lewis.

Historical boundaries

From 1940 to 1966, the 6th Senate District was located in the eastern part of Southside Virginia and included all of the counties of Greensville, Prince George, Surry, Sussex and the City of Hopewell.

As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Davis v. Mann, the 6th District was expanded north of the James River to include all of James City County and the City of Williamsburg in order for all districts to be equipopulous. Additionally, when the City of Emporia was created out of Sussex County, it was included in the district. From 1972 - 1980, the 6th District was merged with the 5th and 7th Districts and they were jointly represented by three Senators. After the 1981 redistricting, there were no more multimember Senate districts. From 1982 - 2002, the district included parts of the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Current boundaries

The 6th District comprises parts of the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach in the Hampton Roads. In addition the district includes the Eastern Shore and Mathews County on the Middle Peninsula. The district includes most of the northern half of Norfolk.
