The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is {{angle bracket|{{IPA|ǀ̬}}}} or {{angle bracket|{{IPA|ᶢǀ}}}}; a symbol abandoned by the IPA but still preferred by some linguists is {{angle bracket|{{IPA|ʇ̬}}}} or {{angle bracket|{{IPA|ᶢʇ}}}}. In languages which use the Bantu letters for clicks, this is most commonly written {{angle bracket|gc}}, but it is written {{angle bracket|dc}} in those languages that use {{angle bracket|g}} for the uvular fricative.
