Publication historyThe wereshark was created by John Eric Holmes in the 1970s,[1] author of the first D&D Basic Set (often referred to as the "Holmes Basic" set"). Its first appearance was in Alarums & Excursions #13 (July 1976).[2][3] The wereshark first appeared for AD&D in the first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[4] Weresharks are available to use as player characters in Night Howlers (1992),[5] which resulted in Rick Swan describing them as one of the "oddball variants" of lycanthrope in the basic Dungeons & Dragons game.[6] The wereshark appeared in second edition for the Forgotten Realms setting in the City of Splendors (1994) boxed set, and under the "lycanthrope" heading in Monstrous Compendium Annual Volume Two (1995).[7] The wereshark appeared in third edition in Monsters of Faerûn (2001),[8] and appeared in Lost Empires of Faerûn (2005).[9] DescriptionA wereshark is a neutral evil human inflicted with a form of lycanthropy which enables it to take shark form whenever it chooses.
