The open cut mine was developed to provide coal for the Eraring Power Station. The mine started in 1992 and closed in February 2012 due to exhaustion of mineable reserves.[1]{{rp|5 (PDF page 15)}} The mine site is being rehabilitated following most equipment being removed. The mine area has been reshaped to remove any high walls and covered with topsoil and seeded with native vegetation.[2] During the last nine years of the mine's life, it was operated under contract by Thiess Australian Mining and was the most productive mine in the Hunter Valley region measured by production tonnes per team member.[3] The rehabilitated mine site has second generation flora and seven threatened species of wildlife have been observed.[4] References1. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.glencore.com.au/en/who-we-are/energy-products/westside/AEMR/Westside-Mine_AEMR-2013.pdf |title=Westside Mine |work=Annual Environmental Management Report 2012-2013 |date=July 2013 |publisher=Oceanic Coal Australia Limited |accessdate=10 December 2018}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.nswmining.com.au/NSWMining/media/NSW-Mining/Events/2013%20EC%20Conference/3-Neil-Rae.pdf |first=Neil |last=Rae |work=NSW Mining Conference |title=Glencore Xstrata Westside Story Mine Closure and Rehabilitation |date=September 2013 |accessdate=10 December 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://mininglink.com.au/site/westside |title=Westside |website=MiningLink |accessdate=10 December 2018}} 4. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/former-glencore-westside-mine-site-now-awash-with-luscious-forest-and-a-home-to-threatened-native-wildlife/news-story/f66b132f71c556d615df54c4693db95d |title=Former Glencore Westside mine site now awash with luscious forest and a home to threatened native wildlife |first=Samantha |last=Townsend |newspaper=The Daily Telegraph |date=19 August 2014 |accessdate=10 December 2018}}
