Whitefish Bay is a self-unloading lake freighter that entered service with Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) in 2013. The vessel is the third of CSL's {{sclass2-|Trillium|freighter|0|ship}} ships.[1] Her sister ships are {{ship||Baie Comeau|ship, 2013|2}}, {{ship||Baie St. Paul|ship, 2012|2}} and {{ship||Thunder Bay|ship, 2013|2}}. Design and descriptionAccording to the Miramar Ship Index Whitefish Bay has a {{GT|24,430|disp=long}} and a {{DWT|37,690|metric|disp=long}}.[2] However, on the CSL website, the ship is stated as having a DWT of 34,500 tons.[3] Whitefish Bay is {{convert|225.5|m|ftin}} long overall with a beam of {{convert|23.76|m|ftin}}.[2] Whitefish Bay has a maximum draught of {{convert|9|m}}. The ship is powered by one IMO Tier III MAN B&W 6S50ME diesel engine driving one shaft creating {{convert|8750|kW|lk=on}}.[4]The ship is equipped with five holds and has a net hold capacity of {{convert|41,917.96|m3}}. The vessel has an average unloading rate of {{convert|5450|t}} per hour.[3] CSL asserts that the new vessels will be more efficient than existing vessels, and will leave less pollution.[8] Construction and careerWhitefish Bay was constructed at the Chengxi shipyard in Jiangyin, China with the yard number 9303. The ship was completed in May 2013.[2] Comedian Rick Mercer broadcast a recording of his visit to Whitefish Bay as it transited the lowest lock on the Welland Canal.[5]The ship went aground on 12 July 2016 at Hamilton Island in the Saint Lawrence Seaway east of Cornwall, Ontario while carrying a load of coal.[6] According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the ship suffered a massive power failure, which caused it to run aground.[7] The ship was refloated on 14 July with the aid of tugboats and was to be taken to Saint-Zotique, Quebec for inspection.[6] References1. ^{{cite news |url = http://www.mprnews.org/story/2013/07/29/business/whitefish-bay |title = 'Whitefish Bay,' first ship of new fleet, arrives in Duluth |newspaper = MPRNews |first = Dan |last = Kraker |date = 2013-07-29 |archiveurl = https://www.webcitation.org/query?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mprnews.org%2Fstory%2F2013%2F07%2F29%2Fbusiness%2Fwhitefish-bay&date=2014-07-17 |archivedate = 2014-07-17 |accessdate = 2014-07-17 |deadurl = yes |df = }} [8]2. ^1 2 {{csr|register=MSI|id=9639880|shipname=Whitefish Bay|accessdate=28 June 2016}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |url=https://www.cslships.com/en/canada-steamship-lines/fleet/vessels-and-specs/whitefish-bay|title=Whitefish Bay|publisher=CSL Group |accessdate=28 June 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.cslships.com/en/media-center/brochures/csls-trillium-class-laker-0 |title=CSL'S Trillium Class Laker |publisher=CSL Group |accessdate=22 June 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web | url = http://www.greatlakesseawaynews.com/great-lakes-and-saint-lawrence/2013/12/10/the-cbcs-rick-mercer-takes-csls-whitefish-bay-through-the-we.html| title = The CBC's Rick Mercer Takes CSL's Whitefish Bay Through the Welland Canal| website = Great Lakes Seaway News| author = Rick Mercer| date = 2013-12-10| archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20140717224643/http://www.greatlakesseawaynews.com/great-lakes-and-saint-lawrence/2013/12/10/the-cbcs-rick-mercer-takes-csls-whitefish-bay-through-the-we.html| archivedate = 2014-07-17| deadurl = No }} 6. ^1 {{cite news |url=http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news03/ship-refloated-on-st-lawrence-river-after-grounding-20160714 |title=Ship refloated on St. Lawrence River after grounding |first=Brian |last=Kelly |date=14 July 2016 |accessdate=14 July 2016|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160714142321/http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news03/ship-refloated-on-st-lawrence-river-after-grounding-20160714 |archivedate=14 July 2016}} 7. ^{{cite news |url=http://www.cornwallnewswatch.com/2016/07/13/power-failure-caused-ship-grounding-dfo/ |title=Power failure caused ship grounding: DFO |newspaper=Cornwall Newswatch |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160714143144/http://www.cornwallnewswatch.com/2016/07/13/power-failure-caused-ship-grounding-dfo/ |archivedate=14 July 2016 |date=13 July 2016 |accessdate=14 July 2016}} 8. ^1 {{cite web| url = http://www.marinelink.com/news/trillium-class-sails348269.aspx| title = CSL's Trillium Class Sails for Great Lakes| website = Marine Link| date = 2012-10-05| accessdate = 2013-07-02| archivedate = 2012-11-01| archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20121101130248/http://www.marinelink.com/news/trillium-class-sails348269.aspx| deadurl = No | quote = "The Baie St. Paul and her sister vessels represent the beginning of a new era for CSL and for bulk shipping in the Great Lakes," said Louis Martel, President of Canada Steamship Lines.
