Early life and educationDeKay was born in London, Ontario. He studied at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto and interned at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. CareerDeKay began his photojournalist career in 1980. He traveled throughout Canada photographing rural settings and people.[2] He worked for the London Free Press and was a staff photographer for the Detroit Free Press,[3][4] where he was the recipient of a number of state and national photojournalism awards.
