He was the first son of Archibald Douglas of Cavers, who he succeeded in 1741. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Roxburghshire from 1715 to 1722, for Dumfries Burghs from 1722 to 1727, for Roxburghshire again from 1727 to 1734 and February 1742 to 1747. He was hereditary Sheriff of Roxburgh from 1741-42, resigning in favour of his brother Archibald in order to become MP for the county. [1] He died unmarried in 1748. His brother Archibald became 15th Laird of Cavers.
