William I. Brustein is Vice President for Global Strategies and International Affairs and Eberly Family Distinguished Professor of History at West Virginia University.[1] Previously, he was the Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs at The Ohio State University, as well as the Associate Provost for International Affairs and Director of International Programs and Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.[2] Brustein has spent much of his administrative career focused on international education."[3] He has published widely in the areas of political extremism and ethnic/religious/racial prejudice.

Professional Service

Brustein currently holds the position of Vice President for Global Strategies and International Affairs, as well as Professor History, Political Science, and Sociology at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV.[7] Formerly, Brustein was Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs; Professor of Sociology, Political Science and History; and President, OSU Global Gateways; all at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.[8] Throughout his career, he held many positions as both director and scholar in the field of International Studies. Brustein served as the Associate Provost for International Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2007 to 2009,[9] as well as Alumni Professor of International Studies and Professor of Sociology, Political Science and History for the same institution during that time period.[10] He has also served as President of the Association of International Education Administrators (2007-2008),[11] a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University (2006–present),[12] Director of the University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh (2001-2006),[13] and a Visiting Scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science (1999) and the Freie Universität in Berlin (1989).[14]

On May 8, 2012, Brustein was elected chair of the Senior International Officers of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation.[15] He is also currently working with the Board of Directors of Columbus 2020[16] and the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce,[17] and serving on the Boards of the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities, Inc,[18] the Columbus Council on World Affairs,[19] and Columbus Sister Cities International.[20] Past professional service positions include Chair of the International Education Leadership Knowledge Community (2010);[21] President of the Association of International Education Administrators (2007-2008);[22] and Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, Commission on International Programs, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (2005-2010).[23] Brustein also has served on the Editorial Boards of Social Science History (1994-1997), Journal of Studies in International Education (2004-2008) and Sociological Forum (2006–present).[24]

Honors and awards

In February 2013, Brustein was awarded the Charles Klasek Award for outstanding service to the field of international education administration by the Association of International Education Administrators.[25]

His scholarly work has earned him academic honors, including the afore-mentioned Alumni Professor of International Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.[26] Brustein was named a University of Utah Faculty Fellow (1984-1985), a Fulbright Fellow (1988-1989),[27] and the McKnight Distinguished University Professor at the University of Minnesota (2000).[28] He was elected to the Sociological Research Association in 1996.[29] He also has been recognized in Marquis Who’s Who in the World, in America, and in American Education.[30]

Brustein also has received a Morse Amoco Award for Outstanding Contributions to Higher Education (1993-1994), a University College/Continuing Education Distinguished Teaching award (1996), and admittance into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers (1998), all from the University of Minnesota.[31] He was recognized by the University of Utah with the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Superior Teaching Award in 1987.

Books

Brustein has published widely in the areas of political extremism and ethnic/religious/racial prejudice.[32] His 1996 book The Logic of Evil: The Social Origins of the Nazi Party, 1925-1933 was the winner of the 1997 James S. Coleman Distinguished Contribution to Rational-Choice Scholarship from the American Sociological Association, Rational-Choice Section.[33] His publications include:
