William P. Mullen is the current Allegheny County Sheriff, serving metropolitan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mullen was elected to office, starting his first term in October 2006. He has since been re-elected in 2009, 2013 and 2017. He joined the ACSO in 2006 as Chief Deputy.

Mullen has had a long and successful law enforcement career, dating back to 1969 when he was hired by the Pittsburgh Police. He served over 37 years for the City, where he worked in number of divisions, including: Narcotics Detective, Homicide Lieutenant, Commander, Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Investigations and Deputy Chief.

Mullen has received numerous commendations for solving rape and murder cases, which he was recognized by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Drug Enforcement Agency for the solution of high-profile investigations.

As Sheriff of Allegheny County, Mullen's key accomplishments include:

  • Establishment of Mortgage Conciliation Program, reducing mortgage foreclosures by 40%.
  • Implementation of Courthouse Emergency Response Team which responds to crisis situations in the court facilities.
  • Project D.U.M.P. (Disposal of Unused and Expired Medications Properly), which has helped reduce the amount of opioids available to users in the county. The initiative is a one of a kind, opioid reduction program which residents can contact the Sheriff's Office to schedule an event or pickup of their unused/expired medications to be incinerated by sheriff's deputies.

Mullen attended South Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Dayton. Additionally, Mullen graduated from the FBI National Academy, Disaster Management School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
