Stokes was also the Chief of the Criminal division of the Maine Attorney General's Office.[3] On May 7, 2014, Stokes was nominated to serve as a Maine Superior Court justice by Governor Paul LePage. Stokes would fill the seat currently held by Jeffrey Hjelm, who LePage nominated to serve on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.[2] Stokes was unanimously confirmed on July 31, and had said he would need to resign as mayor at that moment.[4][5] References1. ^{{cite news|first=|last=|title=Mayor's Office |url=http://www.augustamaine.gov/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={3C72DD33-BA34-435C-B81D-F400AD18BEE2} |work=City of Augusta, Maine |publisher=|date= |accessdate=2012-02-19}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Stokes, William R.}}{{Maine-politician-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite news|title=Office of the Maine Attorney General |url=http://www.maine.gov/ag/about/office_organization.html |accessdate=2012-06-19}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Augusta Mayor Stokes nominated for judgeship |url=http://www.kjonline.com/news/Augusta_Mayor_Stokes_nominated_for_judgeship_.html |accessdate=2014-05-07}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Senate elevates Superior Court judge, long time prosecutor to the bench|url=http://bangordailynews.com/2014/07/31/politics/senate-elevates-superior-court-judge-long-time-prosecutor-to-the-bench/ |accessdate=2014-08-01}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Augusta faces a week with no mayor if Stokes becomes judge|url=http://www.pressherald.com/2014/07/15/augusta-faces-a-week-without-a-mayor-if-stokes-gets-new-job/ |accessdate=2014-08-01}} 6 : Mayors of Augusta, Maine|Maine Democrats|Living people|Maine lawyers|Maine state court judges|Year of birth missing (living people) |
