The 32nd District of the Wisconsin Senate is located in western Wisconsin, and is composed of all of Crawford and La Crosse Counties, almost all of Vernon, and part of Monroe County.[1]

Current elected officials

Jennifer Shilling is the state senator serving the 32nd district. She was elected to the senate during a special election in 2011 and was re-elected in November 2012. Before serving as a senator, she was in the State Assembly.[2][3] Shilling is the current Senate Minority Leader.

The area of the 32nd Senate District contains three State Assembly Districts:[4]

  • The 94th (represented by Steve Doyle)
  • The 95th (represented by Jill Billings)
  • The 96th (represented by Lee Nerison)

The district is located within Wisconsin's 3rd congressional district, which is represented by U.S. Representative Ron Kind.[5]

Past senators

The 32nd District was created in 1861 after the 1860 Federal Census, when the State Senate was expanded from 30 to 33 members. The first to represent the district was M. D. Bartlett, a Republican from Durand who served in the 1862 and 1863 sessions. At that time, the district consisted of Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin and Trempeleau Counties.

The district has been represented by:[6]

  • Joseph G. Thorp, 1866-1867
  • Charles K. Erwin. 1882-1889
  • John C. Gaveney, 1901-1905
  • Otto Bosshard, 1911-1917
  • Valentine S. Keppel, 1925-1933
  • Oscar S. Paulson, 1937-1940
  • Rudolph Schlabach, 1940-1953
  • Raymond Bice, Sr., 1953-1958
  • Milo Knutson, 1968-1976
  • Paul Offner, 1976-1984
  • Brian Rude, 1984-2000
  • Mark Meyer, 2000-2004
  • Dan Kapanke, 2004-2011

Note: The boundaries of districts have changed over history. Previous politicians of a specific numbered district will have represented a different geographic area, due to redistricting.
