It is situated {{convert|10|km|0}} south of Elim and {{convert|35|km}} southwest of Bredasdorp. It was originally named Wolfgat or Wolvengat in reference to the brown hyena, known as strandwolf in Afrikaans.[2] However, when the local post office was established the authorities named it Viljoenshof[3] in honour of DJ Viljoen, the Dutch Reformed (NGK) minister of Bredasdorp from 1904 to 1934;[4] this name was then extended to the village. The original name Wolvengat was officially restored in 1991.[5] In the early 1900s the village had a school with 100 children, but by the early 21st century there was neither a church nor a school. The fertile soil, and the potential of using land for vineyards, explains the high property prices.[3] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite web |url=http://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/172026 |title = Main Place Wolvengat |work=Census 2011}} {{Overberg District Municipality}}2. ^{{cite book |first1=Karena |last1=du Plessis |first2=Melanie |last2=Cleary |title=The Overberg: inland from the tip of Africa |location=Cape Town |publisher=Struik |year=2005 |isbn=9781868729920 |page=130}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|author=Peter Joyce|title=Presenting South Africa|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=0Y1oSSqpl3oC&pg=PA130|year=2004|publisher=Struik|isbn=978-1-77007-080-6|page=130}} 4. ^{{cite book |first1=Peter E |last1=Raper |first2=Lucie A |last2=Möller |first3=L Theodorus |last3=du Plessis |title=Dictionary of South African Place Names |edition=4th |location=Johannesburg |publisher=Jonathan Ball |year=2014 |isbn=9781868425495 |page=529}} 5. ^{{cite news |first=Maureen |last=Joubert |date=6 November 1991 |title=Viljoenshof is weer Wolvengat |trans-title=Viljoenshof is Wolvengat again |url=http://m24arg02.naspers.com/argief/berigte/dieburger/1991/11/06/8/8.html |language=Afrikaans |newspaper=Die Burger |location=Cape Town |accessdate=15 January 2015}} 1 : Populated places in the Overstrand Local Municipality |
