World Coffee Research (also known as WCR) is a non-profit research and development agricultural research non-profit.[1]. Their stated mission is: "Grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihoods of the families who produce it"[2]. The organization was founded with participation or funds from thirty coffee industry groups including the Specialty Coffee Association of America, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Peet's Coffee & Tea, Counter Culture Coffee, the coffee importers InterAmerican Coffee, and specialty coffee providers Coffee Bean International.[3][4] In a very real way, WCR enables the global coffee industry to invest in agricultural innovation to empower producers. More than 103 companies support their cutting-edge research because they recognize it is an essential precondition for farmers to achieve sustainable livelihoods.

Geneticist Timothy Schilling is the Executive Director of the organization.[5] WCR uses advanced and applied research in coffee genetics and agronomy to create new varieties, agronomic approaches, and market opportunities for farmers to become more resilient and profitable, especially in the face of significant threats like climate change.[6]

WCR relies on collaboration with local research institutions, coffee organizations, governments, and NGOs to carry out a common research agenda[7]. In each country, they collaborate with the national coffee institute or organization to align our work to their strategy. Together, they agree on research activities that World Coffee Research and the country can undertake collaboratively. They also partner with the private sector to ensure the rapid uptake of agricultural innovations through the coffee supply chain. As of December 2018, they collaborated with 81 partners, including 33 government institutes and research organizations[8].
