It was the first international school to be licensed in the city, created to provide a schooling option for the children of expatriate businesspeople, diplomats and NGO workers.[1] It offers kindergarten through 12th grade classes based on the American education system. The school was founded in March 1997 with the help of the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Education. The first teacher and principal was Esther Kenyon, who taught eleven students spanning eight grades in a one-room school house. The school was formally granted license to operate by the State Ministry of Education in Beijing in 1999 and celebrated its grand opening in the August of that year. Since then the school has grown rapidly and now provides education to students from over 20 countries.
