The town is in the Hepburn Shire local government area, {{convert|128|km|mi}} north west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the {{CensusAU|2016}}, Yandoit and the surrounding area had a population of 154.[1] The Yandoit area was first settled by Captain John Stuart Hepburn.[2] Alluvial gold was discovered in 1854 and 5,000 miners came to the area creating a gold rush. The gold soon ran out and deep lead mining started in 1858.[2] The town was surveyed in 1861 when it had a population of 232. Despite its population declining to 77 in 1881, Yandoit was proclaimed a township in 1885.[2] Many Swiss Italians settled in Yandoit and built many of the remaining stone buildings.[2] GalleryReferences1. ^1 {{Census 2016 AUS|id=SSC22887 |name=Yandoit (State Suburb)|accessdate=31 August 2017|quick=on}} 2. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|title=Yandoit|url=http://www.egold.net.au/biogs/EG00305b.htm|work=Electronic Encyclopedia of Gold in Australia|publisher=Cultural Heritage Unit, The University of Melbourne|accessdate=19 January 2014}} External links{{Commons category-inline}}
